I'm not really a fan of Ikea. It often makes me feel a little bit sad, as most of my purchases of the years have fallen apart. And it all looks a little dull. Although the kids do love the meatballs. Anyway, blah blah
I saw this the other day and thought it was bloomin lovely. A really nice piece of design. (needs to be seen in person). Thought I'd share.

I really like this. Especially considering the other lights I've been looking at have been $500+ and use regular bulbs (I've been gradually replacing everything with LEDs). It's in-store only and the nearest is three hours away, so hopefully they still have it once I get a chance to go out there.

Have you seen IKEA Hackers?
Some of the things they do with IKEA stuff is really fun. So if you don't like a model, be your own designer and hack it.

I've always been a fan of Ikea. I understand some of the hate for it being disposable and low quality (which really depends on the individual piece and how you put it together). When you're first starting out though with your own place it's nice to have fresh, creative design rather than old dusty hand-me-downs, walmart junk, or nothing at all. It's pretty easy to outfit a studio apartment down to the kitchen utensils for $1000. Once you get settled down and have the money to afford nicer things you can gradually replace the Ikea stuff. When I was a kid back in the late 80s and early 90s we'd make eight-hour road trips to the one in Toronto and I still have some of the stuff from those trips in daily use. A lot of it has been modified as well (LACK tables with the legs cut down in half make for great product photography platforms). The as-is section is an endless source of DIY treasure as well.
The only thing that really gets to me is when people associate all modern design with Ikea and cheap. It's hard to explain to a drunk college kid that a simple plywood and steel chair cost $1000 and isn't meant to be jumped on...
