Seems to be plywood with a walnut veneer.

Is that laminate over particleboard?
Seems to sag in the middle.

last picture
shows a sliver of light from a gap in the back, as a result of sagging. And that is with the unit empty!
Whatever it is, it is definitely poor quality.

Thanks for pointing that out. You definitely caught that.
Funny thing is the unit is actually quite sturdy and feels incredibly well-built. There is that little gap in the back but otherwise the wood is strong.
Still curious as to maker. The Bang & Olufsen recommendation does seem to be interesting. A few things I've come across seem to have that feel. I could probably take some better shots than the phone.
Hope someone can still help nail down the era and designer.
