deeper problem
Looking at this from an extraordinarliy narrow perspective of one living journalist and some dead designers. Theres a deeper problem with Ikea and their customers, and I'm going to sound a bit soft here, but there is no soul in Ikea, nothing messily human about it. It all seems like there is an Ikea shaped die and people and lives get extruded through it.
The obvious argument of 'cheap things for lots of people'...says it all.
As Koen pointed out the other day we vote with our wallets now, anyone who buys Ikea is casting their vote, good luck to them, we'll need it.
Imagine
Can't say it any better!....
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today...
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one
Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world...
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
Well, I see
the willingness to share the planet is alive and well ! (Heh-heh]
Of course, as we "fill up," the crowding (real or imagined) results in more "me first," "this is mine," "out of my way" etc.
Have you noticed less sharing of space on the sidewalk and the street lately ? People used tp move aside for strangers -- believe it or not.

Don't get me started, I'm...
Don't get me started, I'm only 30 and I could be nostalgic for hours, I havn't bought an album for years and rarely go to the cinema...and those bloody leaf blower things. Has anyone been into a library lately? Silence is Golden? Not anymore, its all Ikeas fault ! 🙂
Noise and light pollution are real problems too.
Need to Read
Folks Folks Folks
I have been reading this tired thread for days it started with ones guy excitement about a free trip to Sweeden to visit the Ikea factory ,
A well known writer from Syndey who writes about design and other topics and has a Masters in English. ENOUGH ALREADY !!!! this topic and guy has been dissected, satired, throw in Philosophical meanings, accused or selling out to the design world. and down't forget John Lennon Imangine poem . and Vivenne telling us once again from her many entries that she drinks to much... and could drink more than someone else.. This is what we call in America out of hand and stupid .
My hats off to the writer.... have a good time in Sweeden. enjoy the factory , kick some tires, and tell us what magazine we can read you story in . enought already next thread let this one die...
no time of the month for me
No time of the month for me !!!! just interested in reading good comments by good people who have something to say about design and can share their ideas. . I have said it and Patrick and Alix have said it..... This is a forum about design!!!! If you want a chat room you can find lots of them on the internet and you can be real clever, funny witty, and even x-rated and you will have tons of people comning in to say you are the sharpest tool in the shead!!! Just keep it real and interesting so the smart people will stay and not have to tune out cause it is stupid!!!!
Thanks
I guess I was expecting my fellow forum members to be happy for me (as some of them were). It's not often one gets offered an all expenses trip anywhere, let alone to the other side of the globe. I only mentioned I was a well know Sydney journo, to put the offer in some sort of context, not as any sort of boast. And I only made mention of litigation because it was implied by SETAG (Mr Gates we can assume - god I hope it isn't Bill) that I would be selling out.
I was simply excited about travelling so far from the antipodes.
I didn't expect it would attract the sheer bitchiness that it did from the likes of Pauleanne and Vivienne.
This will be my last post for quite a while. What a nasty bunch (not to mention snobby) some of you design addicts appear to be.
