We recently came into possession of my grandparent's oak table that was purchased for their farmhouse in 1938. We would like to use it in our kitchen, however our design aesthetic is mostly modern.

How would you modify the table to modernize it? Or should we simply refinish it? What chairs would you pair with it? Nothing is off-limits as long as it remains a table and changes aren't wasteful.

We are looking for inspiration and would love some ideas!

Hi
I would leave the table as is. Perhaps paired with highly contrasting chairs (in terms of material, color, etc.) such as Panton chairs.

I concur
quality vintage solid Mission oak is a flavor that doesn't really go out of style
and do colors on the chairs in lieu of painting the table
(Don't paint the table)

I would not change the table...
I would not change the table itself. It seems to be a nice-well made piece of your family history. You can always give it a modern flair by pairing it with chairs that are a bit more modern. Many people mix styles with success.
