Hi all! I'm new here, but wanted to know if anyone could help me identify this chair. The owner said it's all original parts from the 60's, but I'm wondering if that's accurate. I can't find any information on these bases with non-upholstered chairs which leads me to wonder if the upholstery was removed or if the shell is a replacement. The shell is also a color I'm not sure I can identify. The base seems to match the DAT-1 chair tilt, swivel, roll, but that's all I can find and I also think they made these bases into the 70's. The caster wheels are marked from Evansville, In. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I attached some pics from a picasa link:

looks legit
The color looks like the taupe color that I've seen many times.
Could be that the shell and base are not original to each other but I can't tell from the shock mount impressions.
It is Herman Miller though.
If you are worried that it might be a shell that formerly had upholstery on it, you should ask about (and look for) holes in the middle of the seat that might have been filled. I don't see any from these pics though.
Nice shape too. I do see a small spot that looks like it could be a repair just above the rear right of the seat. Could be nothing.
Overall it looks like a nice chair.

Looks fine to me
If you want to check that the base is original to the shell, remove the base and look for matching indentations on the shock mounts.
Also, the shell looks like Summit which would probably indicate 70s production (don't know the exact time period though).

I have the same chair
Mine is parchment and has the same swivel tilt base. Mine was upholstered with NO holes, but some glue residue I have been sanding off. I have never quite finished what with so any other "to dos". My base and chair are an original pair with the two triangles on the bottom, an S in circle embossment and a HERMAN MILLER embossment with HM logo above.

Thanks for the info everyone!...
Thanks for the info everyone! That sounds like my chair. No holes, but the markings on the bottom are the same.

you might
ask if the shell has been recoated with penetrol.
If it did have a cover, and it was removed and sanding had to take place, then it almost certainly needed to be recoated.
This shell does not have that ridiculously "wet" look that shells have when they get a coating. It looks original. So I am guessing you are fine, and maybe it never had a cover.
Many people probably don't mind a chair that has been recoated with penetrol. I guess you have to if it has been sanded. But re-coating it makes it no longer original. I would not knowingly buy a re coated shell.
