Hi - I have a Wegner 'Papa Bear' chair that has been in my family since the early 60's. I am considering selling it and had some questions for any Wegner experts out there: -- Underneath the chair I do not see a maker's stamp, however there is a 'Danish Furniture Makers Control' tag and also the number '28'. Does anyone know what the '28' refers to? And the stamp not being there -- how much of an issue is this with these chairs of that age? Are they known to rub off over time? Are there other ways of validating its authenticity? -- Does anyone know the official fabric description for brown wool? I think this was one of the most popular fabric choices? -- Can anyone comment on what they would think the value of this chair is? Many thanks to any who care to comment.

It would have been nice...
...to have the original stamp on it, but I would not worry about that. It is the original A.P.Stolen made Hans Wegner design with the original Kvadrat flat woven fabric. If the picture of the stamp shows...as I hope it will, you will see that it could be just the continuation of the picture you are showing....it did not so I am including the link. Have a close look at the last picture.
One detail that does not show well on your picture are the "folds" in the fabric between the buttons of the backrest.

The Furniture Control emblem...
The Furniture Control emblem leads me to think this is a post 1950's production piece. Perhaps that's why there isn't an A.P. Stolen stamp?

calm down calm down
before you get into too much speculation on what the 29 means and if the chair should have a stamp or not.
The chair is the original pappa bear and the furniture control board label indicates that the design was submitted to the board for scrutiny and testing before the chair was put into serial production.
Danish furniture control board still operates today and still tests new designs and advises designers / manufacturers on best practice and construction.
The 29 is simply a mark for the maker in Arne Poulsens workshop. much like a signature but only those who worked there could tell how had made just that chair.
The other tell tale signs are the pale webbing straps which are just slack enough to cup the latex cushion.
Fab chair and SUCH a comfortable chair to sit in.

value
the chair sells around £2000 - £2500 in Danish auctions.
Retail you look around double that but as a private seller you will be lucky to get near that.
Prices on Wegner pappa bears have gone up by aprox 12 - 15% over the last 2 years so I'd hang on to it and use it.
Dont worry about the fabric. You can get many a fabrics which are near as dammit the same although modern.
See Gabriel who supply many fantastic original fabrics like the interglobe wool and chess royal
