Hey guys,

Picked up an aluminum group dining "contract" table thrifting yesterday because I've been looking for a white laminate top to use on a coffee table base I have.

Due to my inexperience, the top's holes don't line up and fit on my other base. This base has a rather small 4 star connector (I'm not sure what this is properly called) and is nothing like the other 4-star steel tops I have seen.

I've put the two side by side for comparison. Is this legitimate? Perhaps just an earlier design I never knew about. Even on other contract bases, I've seen the same larger 4-star top connector as the universal base.

Also would love some advice on the best way to fit this top to my "universal base" with the larger 4 star top design. Just create some pilot holes for the new fitting?

Thanks.

The smaller scale base can (relatively) get a little tippy; I think it was just a lower cost version for the cafeteria, NOT so much the lab or workstation. I prefer the super sturdy stuff that is downright overdesigned for household use... I have a little occasional height Eames contract base table with my desk that's stamped "Max Weight 300#". It's sure not going to fall over by itself!
Just line it up, mark it, and screw 'er in. Keep to a small top.

Thanks Objectworship!
It did feel a little cheap to me as well for some reason. Nice to know it's legitimate.

Since you were (sort of) asking, the four-pronged support for the tabletop is called the spider.
