I found this Hans Wegner rocking chair on CL last nite for $40 bucks. Was shocked to see it was actually brown and not black as I'd thought. Any ideas on the color - I know they came in a variety of finishes, but I wasn't aware these came in brown...
Thanks all - I appreciate the help!!

The top of that back post
looks like a lighter wood (I'm guessing beech, since many were made of beech) with brown enamel. It doesn't even really look like stain to me.
What do the bottoms of the rockers look like? Could you take a clear closeup of them?
I have one of these chairs in beech with a lacquer finish. I love the chair design, not so much the beech.
Here's a few
Here's a few of the actual rockers. (The lights a bit crappy today.)
I agree, it def appears to be beech and does not appear to be stained, but maybe a brown enamel like you've suggested. The color is very even, very saturated looking. When I pull any of the cording on the seats slightly to the side, the color is the same underneath.
Thanks for the continued help!
Maybe it was a special order finish,
or maybe just something that they tried for awhile, who knows. It's also possible (but not likely?) that the chair was painted professionally for an owner after the original lacquer on the beech became scuffed and scratched. Someone who cared about details would have removed the label and put it back on the finished chair. I guess.
The rails on stained and painted chairs are always stained/painted a little past the posts in case the seat material doesn't completely cover them. But the entire rail wouldn't be stained or painted. If yours are painted in the middle of the rail, then I would suspect the chair was painted later.
But I also think it's possible that brown enamel was offered as an original finish sometime in the history of the manufactur of this chair.
Thanks, spanky
for your input. I greatly appreciate all of your help.
I pulled the cording apart at the center of the rail and, as you've said, it looks like plain wood. The brown is growing on me a bit more, and boy oh boy is it actually quite comfortable 🙂
Thanks again for your input!!
In my opinion
I could see where someone may refinish this piece. However, someone who knew FOR SURE what this piece was and valued the piece would not have it refinished period.
If I came across one of this with chipped paint or stain that was worn, I would leave it as is because it would be considered original condition. Any MCM lover that is die hard would not even speak of refinishing a piece in original state. I have passed up pieces that were "too far gone" before, simply because I do restoration myself and didn't have the time to do it, or the money to have someone else professionally restore. I picked up a Hans Olsen rocker a few years back, in what looked like pretty gross condition in my opinion, someone had reupholstered the seat with some disgusting home interior era fabric. I kept tugging at it to feel if original fabric was underneath, sure enough it was. I ended up pulling that fabric off to reveal the original very soiled, and filled with holes chair pad fabric. The head rest was practically pristine. I just could not get past how much that fabric took away from the beauty of the piece, and tattered or not, the original seating created the look and visual of the original piece and it sold for almost top dollar and immediately to a collector.
Just in my experience and opinion, people don't tend to see a piece with any kind of label and tamper with it just to refinish it. If it were refinished, someone paid a small fortune to have it look like it is in original condition. To add, I think this is a later Wegner piece and I don't feel like the paint would be removed to that extent if it were "refinished." This is just my opinion though. I believe it is 100% original, AND very lovely!
