Hi,
I recently bought for a song a George Nelson dresser in need of serious restoration. It will be gorgeous when it's done, but I have a problem. At some point, someone took the legs off of the thing, so I'm going to have to make new ones. But I don't have any visual examples to go by. I've looked at photo after photo, but no one thinks of photographing a piece turned upside down with the legs completely visible. I know the legs are black, but are they made of painted wood? Are they metal? How wide are they? How thick are they? Are they attached with brackets, with screws, with bolts, to some sort of base? I can't make the legs if I don't know what to make. Does anyone have this dresser? And if you do, could you look underneath and describe what's there? What are the legs made of? What are their dimensions? What are they attached to? Or better yet, if you took a few pics and posted them, that would be a big help. I'd really appreciate this. I'm gonna try to upload a photo, but I rarely have any luck with this, so I'm also going to post a link to a good picture from 1stDibs. Thanks. Rebecca

I'm in trouble
Thanks! I had no idea that's what they looked like. They're stunning and much more integral to the piece than I realized. There's no way I can replicate them and it would be a desecration to try to fudge them. I'm not sure what to do. I wonder if I can order them from somewhere.

Yeah.
I was surprised, too, the first time I saw the actual construction. And then I was immediately embarrassed for having been surprised, because OF COURSE they'd have to be sturdier than the two thin boards that they appeared to be in the photos I'd seen.
If you can't make replica legs and you don't want to put non-original hairpin legs or Thin Edge (or Thin Edge style) aluminum legs under your cabinet, a Nelson bench will support it very nicely...

Thank you.
That's a classy alternative.

Consider attaching the dresser to the wall..
at the correct height, minus any legs.
just a thought.

MIght have a set....
I might have a usable set on an old HM cabinet I picked up at a yard sale a while ago. I think the cabinet is beyond repair. It was suggested that sometimes restorers can use the Primavera veneers for patching and repair, and yes the legs are still attached. That's why I held on to it and let it sit in my garage in Philadelphia.
I could trade of sell. Is it okay to post offers like this on the site? If not, please delete and please, please don't have a "conniption".
