I am depressed from the Patriots loss in the Superbowl. Therefore,to lift my spirits,I have been bad(shopping again).I don't go into antique stores looking for any particular thing;things seem to find me.This time,I spied a 48"+ George Nelson ebonized pine bench, marked as such from 1950's-60's.I crawled beneath to look for a label/tag,but, alas, none found. Therefore,I am deferring to the fine DA community to steer me straight.Should there be no Nelson/Herman Miller tagging, what hallmarks should I be looking for on said bench? It definitely has a wonderful patina.BTW,the asking price was $895,and I'm confident I can bargain them down.Lemme know?
Call me cheap, but
I wouldn't pay $895.00 for a Nelson, even it came out of Mr. Nelson's bedroom (and you KNOW how much I love Nelson's stuff)!
I did, however, buy 2 72" current Nelson benches from Home Office Designs for only $125.00 each. They were in their clearance section. One had a scratch (not a big deal) and the other had one of the slats with a glue repair. Even that's not a big deal....getting two benches for $250.00 was a real pleasant surprise...especially since it was not on my list of pieces I needed.
