Six of these chairs and an elliptical table have been in our house for almost 40 years. I took them over along with the house from my parents. They bought the set according to my mother at the Ideal Home exhibition in the early seventies.
It was only a couple of years ago through a friend at work who pointed out that this furniture was a bit special and should be looked after...!
As you can see from the photos I'm afraid the chairs are very scuffed around a lot of the edges although the table fortunately remains in good condition.
At some point I would like to get them back to their former glory but I am on a very tight budget. I do have daily access through work to a decent spray booth set up but this we use for spraying up large hanging sheets of wood weave blind fabric in water-based paint although this last week after work I have stayed on to spray over oil-based eggshell on to an old Jarman & Platt dressing table (it's looking good)......But I feel the work on these chairs would require much more precision.
Any tips would be most appreciated....and also I guess I need to know how the upholstery could be removed..? Is it likely to be completely glued on?...Is it too ambitious an undertaking for an early restoration project? ...Thanks for any feedback. Paul
Thanks, tchp
Pretty sure that upholstery is newer than the chairs. It's chenille and I don't think they used that when the chairs were made. It also has more padding than I think were used in the originals and the welt looks uneven.
The only chairs like this that I've seen in person were originals at the home of friends in Copenhagen. They weren't all that padded, maybe 1/2" at most. My friend said the fabric mostly served to keep you from sliding off the chair if you slouched a bit.
I don't know how the fabric is on there, though. But if they got it off once, I'm sure you can remove it again. That is, if it was correctly redone the last time. Big "if", I guess.
No idea on the best way to replaint. Good luck!
