Found two Eames bikinis with dowel bases (DKW) a block from my apartment. No bikinis. I would say fair/poor condition, rusty but no broken welds.

Looking for any information about these chairs. Value? Year manufactured? Considering sandblasting then powder coating them.

eames bikinis
As I am writing to you at this moment. I have three eames wire chairs at the sand blaster and powder coater
and I had to have two of them welded.
I am having the three painted in purple with a high gloss and i will keep them out side my powdercoater told me once they are powdercoated they will not rust . Each one of the chairs cost me 65.00 and the one with the broken weld was given to me for 5.00 bucks but I will have around 75.00 to strip them all and around 125.00 to paint them and 20 bucks to fix the broken weld . the stands I bought on ebay for 80.00 in black powdercoat. add it all up and I will have 500.00 in all three but they should be wonderful !!! This same guy redid 2 knoll bertoias from 1952 in a great looking grey and i had red pads made for 50.00
I have in both those chairs 250.00 each.
i could have bought a shiny new one from Furniture fancy for around 200.00 and shipping but nothing like the original from 1952. so go for it. powdercoating is the way to go plus you have the original dow bases
each one of those chairs would be worth an easy 500.00 once redfinished

In good condition these...
In good condition these chairs would be worth around 500-700 each. A refinished chair will be worth less, maybe 300-400. And stay away from purple (or other non-original) paint or the value will probably decrease even more... -matte black is the only way to go with these chairs if you want to keep the original look.
Here's a very nice example that was sold on ebay yesterday:

Great find! of all the bases I think they look best on the dowel, i'm very jealous 🙂
personally I'd remove the major surface rust with a stiff brush and enjoy them as they are, full of character

alexander always makes good points
Alexander does make a good point but i am different since I own so much mid-century furniture over 100 differnt treasured items ... and I really never care to sell them. I get a big kick out of painting them great colors, like purple, rasberry orange, yellow, .
I have noticed that knoll now offers 5 colors for there Bertoia wires and they look so cool..
If you are a puresest and just want black that is cool but the fun of collecting and owning this stuff is spiceing it up and giving it a great look.

I totally agree with LRF; if you plan on keeping them you should choose whatever color makes you happy, but since you asked about the value, I thought it was best to warn you before going all pop-art with these beauties...
Still, I'm always for the keeping the original look and would personally go for a nice colored bikini pad instead.

The thought of painting an Eames wire chair a bright obnoxious color makes my stomach curdle. I will second the notion - that a nice bright bikini would be a way to employ the use of color without totally having your way with someone else's brilliant design.

I guess you like just plain white bread nothing else... try a little rye bread sometimes .. No body is touching the brilliant design of Charles Eames but if you ever saw his case study house he and Ray liked color that is why when most of the world was going ga ga over early American style . He was putting color panels of red, blue , yellow on his home. In the world of modern any thing goes that is colorful !!!!

Good Choice
Much better. And I love all kinds of bread thanks, and I love color too ... in its proper place.
If you'll notice, very little if any of Charles' and Rays' own furniture had much color to it, although I do note the colored panels on the house. This isn't to say you or I must follow their aesthetic. I just peronally like to keep things original to the design.
I love love love Alexander Girard who was a color junkie, so don't get me wrong. I would love an Eames compact in Jacob's coat ... has always been an item I have lusted after.
