Hiya, Gang.

Even tho I've not had any luck with the Arthur Umanoff thread, maybe you can help me suggestion which floor lamp I should buy.

I have a large living room, all white, with light greyish oatmeal colored carpeting. No overheard lighting. I have a number of lamps, but they all point down and provide specific localized lighting.

I do have a large Bubble cigar lamp, but I use it as a timed night light, flipping on around 5:30PM and going off at 1:30AM. It only provides atmospheric light, really.

My first choice would be a tall lighted column that not only provide torchiere-like light upwards, but also illuminates horizonally. there's lots of expensive choice from Flos and Artemide, but 1) I can't view them here in Minneapolis, and 2) they're all so darn expensive.

I DID see the Elise column lamp at Design Within Reach, but it's base is a bit too narrow comfortably sit on carpet, and heck, it didn't seem too bright.

Any ideas? Thanks for you help in advance!

Killan....
How glare-y is the Eileen Gray lamp? Isn't it a naked florescent bulb to one side?
Unless the florescent bulbs have changed, I've stayed away from them because of buzzing and when they go, they start to flicker.

philinea
I think they use an "Philinea" lamp for the Eileen Gray.
This gives nice warm light.

Doesn't anybody else
have an opinion or suggestion for a modern or MCM floor lamp that not only illuminates upward but also providing soft sideways illumination?
Love to hear your suggestions.

Hi Barry
I would also go in line of the cylinder/tubular lamps that you said. Clean lines, simple. Any doubts to me.
I been following Pablo,s lamps, and I like many of them.
I had his web-site but I cannot find it now, (may be you could contact directly to him?).
But I also agree the tall floor lamp is unstable, quite sure, because I had some similar. Well if you put it on a corner and no cats near, no problem. But the other problem that I saw it, it's that has only a bulb down in the base: that means a lot of lamp and (although dramatic) too little light, and It,s not what you need.
(check what I said in 'Additional Images/room views' in the DWR link.)
May be you could find one similar but with at least 2 (or better 3) bulbs.

I think you need general illumination, one of the italian lamps that uses an automotive lamp pointed toward the celing.Castiglionis or a Colombo?

I did consider the Elise lamp - it's really pretty - but two things are a problem;
1) the small footprint makes it not the right lamp for a carpeted floor. I would need the same type of lamp with a wider bottom so it would be safe from tipping over.
2) I saw it light up at my local DWR, and you can really see the light bulbs at the bottom of the shade close to the base. I think I would want a column that illuminates without seeing the bulb "hot spots".
I'm going to go to the Artemide showroom here in town and view some of their stuff.

Toio
Hey azurechicken,
I think you are after the Toio (1962), designed by Achille Castiglioni and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. Allow me to add a picture to that..

Those two are cool
but I'm shying away from any floor that shows a naked bulb.
Too minimal for me, I guess.
I'm going to check out the Artemide showroom here in town one of these days and actually see those megatron and other models in the flesh.

Artemide Pipe Terra
Hi,
I have Pipe Terra, Herzog & De Meuron design - it is a very nice, amazing lamp! It gives good light, it is best when oriented to ceiling or a wall, not really the reading model. The variator (is it called like that, in english?) is integrated in the interuptor, on the middle of the lamp.
I allways imagine that it is a kind of carnivore plant with a mouse blocked somewhere in the middle of it!
