I have a vintage Eames shell that has the begins of strands of fiberglass that are starting to split on the back of the top portion. Not a full on crack, but in time may turn into one...can this is fixed in away to avoid potential damage?

Hate to say it, but that's your only option. Fiberglass fixes aren't ever pretty. And it sounds as if the crack is developing in a spot which flexes which means it's only going to get worse.
