Woody, I suspected that the vintage dowel bases
were on the fragile side...but this makes me wonder: do you think the current dowel bases are any stronger? As much as I don't care about Modernica, I know that their metal Eames bases are strong and quite similar to the Herman Miller bases. I wonder how sturdy those dowel bases are?

No point having any chair that's not safe or comfortable to sit on!!
I'm about 230 pounds (sad to say) and my Grasshopper chair, Aalto tank, Eames shells and my Vitra plastic side Eames chair can all accomodate my fat frame. The only chairs i have problems with are my McCobb kitchen chairs, 'cause the seats are made by birchwood pieces and there's a seam right down the middle and one of them has cracked (I wasn't sitting on it at that time. It was someone much thinner than me!)

Eames bases reproductions wholesale ?
Hi, as a response to these messages, i would like to ask your opinion about the eames dowel bases reproductions for sale. Ebay is full of retaillers who claim that their bases are made in america, or in europe, as a claim for their quality. i've seen a number of eames bases repros and it seems clear to me : They all come from the same place, ie : China. I would like to buy directly from the distributor but i cant locate any, can you help?
Alex

my eames dowel base came from maine - a guy named sasha - very nice fellow. he has local people turn the dowels and another company do the rods, he sands and lacquers the dowels himself. very nice fellow, very high quality. I believe I paid $90 plus shipping which wasn't much via USPS. Let me know if you'd like his address.

bases (at least the most common) aren't worth much of anything. shells are what are valuable (kinda) and are light and easy to ship without the bases.
the reason there are so many shells is because there are still schools, offices, etc that close and throw out and/or sell hundreds if not thousands of these.
i know of one library with over 300 eames shells, aluminum group chairs, tables, etc.
