were all the eames shell chairs stamped with the herman miller logo? i have one that i was given by a friend who had had it in her home since the fifties, it is the elephant gray armchair with the cats cradle base, it is in very goos condition but there is no HM stamp. would there have just been a sticker that would have come off or something?
thanks
Herman miller made the she...
Herman miller made the shell chairs in three factories
and a lot of chairs made in 1973 to 1980 are not embossed with the Herman miller name. alot of them have some form of sticker, and all have a code number on them, why they got away from the embossing is any ones guess,
I bought 10 from a University in Alabama that had nothing on the bottom only the code number and rubber shock mounts that they supposedly got away from in the the early 70s, in favor of the screw mounts,
I tell you anything that anyone tells me about this company i believe i find not one thing, the same,
I can honestly say i have seen almost every shell chair, just last November i had two in the shop that were smaller by 1 inch on each side, the only thing we could figure out that they were designed for tandem seating for a pole that was at the airport or bus station,
So to answer your question some are embossed some are not,
Early 50s
I have six identical parchment color DAX chairs with X-bases (only produced in the 50s) with no trace of embossed or sticker logo.
Could the stickers have come off? Maybe. But it's curious that all six are is great overall condition and all six are missing the sticker.
So, another question is:
Were stickers and embossed stamps used together?
A rep from HM
A rep from HM told me that the earliest chairs - between 50-56 did not always bear the HM logo embossment. Then from 56-60 only had the HM Logo, and not the words 'Herman Miller'. I've found many exceptions to this based on the bases attached and the dates stamped on them.
