Hi,
I recently bought an Eames upholstered shell chair. My issue is that two of the four inset nuts are missing, obviously they are in the foam somewhere! The upholstery is in very good order, so I don't want to take it off. My question is...... Is there another way that I can put inset nuts in without taking the upholstery/foam off or is it a question of putting shock mounts in their place.
Thanks
I had an issue with those nut-inserts turning and just used a strong epoxy (similar to JB Weld) to glue them back in place. I taped off the area around them so it didn't get messy. Worked fine, just don't over tighten and break them loose again. They sit a bit proud of the surface and there should be a black plastic washer that goes around them.
Check McMasterCarr for "Rivet Nuts" or "Threaded Inserts" and find something close to replace what's you're missing. I think the ones on my naugahyde shell chairs are 1/4"-20. If you can fish the old ones out though, that's probably the best bet. I'd almost doubt they got pushed in - they probably fell out instead.
