I recently bought an Eames Lounge which I understand to be a Herman Miller and not a reproduction. I have been reading the threads here about how to tell real from fake and have been looking closely at pictures on the internet and elsewhere. I am 90% convinced that what I have is a Herman Miller. The 10% doubt comes from the fact that the chair does not have any kind of label on the bottom identifying it as Herman Miller. The ottoman does have a small label, but that is all. Does the lack of label mean anything?
I also assumed it was...
I also assumed it was rosewood. The tone is a bit unusual but that could be the lighting.
This and the five-star base lead me to believe it was from the early or mid-80s.
As LuciferSum wrote, Rosewood was discontinued in the 1980s by both HM and Vitra and then reintroduced in 2006.
Unquestionably the real McCoy
Unfortunately, too much credence is placed on mere labels.By the way,I know of people who truly are mistaken(off by decades)in their recollection of when they bought an item.Looks more like a 70's example.(Maybe he actually meant 1973,maybe he bought it used)I too have one without a HM label beneath the seat, while the ottoman indeed does.Yours is 100% the real deal, and a beautiful rosewood example at that-so,sit back and enjoy!
Value
OK, so I spoke to HM and they told me that the clips were changed in 71 from a round shape to a rectangular, which I have. Also as Gustaf indicated, Brazilian Rosewood was discontinued in the mid 80's. Also found out that HM discontinued using down as a pillow fill in 1974 and began using poly fill. MIne has down. So it looks like it was made between 71 and 74.
So my question is - does this date make it more valuable than if it were made in the 80s?
