I recently purchased an Eames LCW with an Evans/Herman Miller tag which I think dates the chair to 1948 (please correct me if I'm wrong). Everything about the chair seems right to my untrained eye (5-2-5 screw arrangement, oval shockmount, etc.), and I don't think the chair has been altered in any way. It's very dirty, and has scratches and a few latex paint specs on it (which come off easily), and one small veneer chip on the back edge of the seat. Otherwise, I think it looks good. I was wondering if some of you with Eames expertise can help me with a few questions.
I'm not sure of the wood species -- is this walnut? Is it ok for me to clean the chair with something like Murphy's oil soap? Is it ok to wax it? I plan to sell the chair, so I don't want to do anything that would put off a potential buyer, but my natural instinct it to clean it up -- which is probably wrong. Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks so much for your response shipwright, but I've examined the chair closely and I really don't see any evidence of restaining or reconditioning of any type. Also, the screws don't seem to me to be any different that those on any of the other chairs listed on any of the major auction sites. What makes you think they're more recent?
This chair was purchased at a local auction site, not via Ebay -- and although it wasn't cheap, there's really no reason to believe anyone was trying to pass this off as anything other than what it is. If you think it's been reconditioned, I'd be interested to know why you think so.
I'm certainly not an expert -- I just don't see any difference between this chair and other of the same period. If I'm wrong, please let me know. Thanks again to anyone who has information to share.

Thanks so much for your assessment tynellbuyer. I've posted a few larger photos, including the label and the rear shock mount. The label does have a few spots of what looks like a stain product -- do you think that's evidence that someone went over the finish at some point? The rear shock mount looks original, but it's also loose (at the attachment to the backrest). If the chair is used, it's just a matter of time before that connection fails. I'm not sure whether to replace it, reglue it, or do nothing. Any thoughts?
If the finish has been modified in the past, I'll relax a bit about cleaning it and waxing it. Thanks again for any advice.
The little spots on the decal may be
evidence that someone went over the chair with a little stain to try and even out and/or enhance the color. Walnut can sometimes appear a dull grayish brown. That spot on the upper back looks like a cleaning or spot-removal attempt. The rest looks like honest wear. If you're planning resale, you might consider leaving everything as is. Good chair.
The clear/transparent edges...
The clear/transparent edges of the decal do appear to show the same color underneath as the surrounding wood, which at least looks like a positive sign to me.
On the other hand, the residue on the decal does look a lot like a stain that beaded up on it.
