Thanks Heath. Yeah, I just can't believe it's not HM/Eames because of the connection of Evans Products Company as well. That seems almost too coincidental with it being such an older company. Why would they have a knock-off base?...
This is getting more interesting by the minute.

Who knows? Maybe they did a run of bases of a different design, decided it was no good and palmed them off to Evans?
What I know about this stuff can be written on a postage stamp so I'll shut up, there should be folk on here who know all the ins and outs.

It's just great to have this conversation going. Thanks Heath.
Authentic or not, it's a beautiful piece and I'm really enjoying it. Can't beat finding it at a garage sale. And the top really is in wonderful condition.

Well I said I'd shut up but I lied, I'm bored.
Maybe have a look at what Evans actually produced for them, maybe a design change on their part? I thought it was just a plywood moulding company... perhaps you could ask the fella you bought it from.

Update...
Thanks Heath. You've been great helping on this.
I actually called him today since I was free. Left a voicemail for any further info. We'll see where that leads...
Having said that, I'm still leaning on it's legit...prototype/design change/etc.

Maybe it's
a repurposed chair or ottoman base?
Also, the "teardrop" ends of the legs (although not the central stem, of course, or the angle of the legs themselves) look a lot like the ends of the La Fonda table legs.

I thought that too and did some image searches, nothing came up, if you have no joy try HM or the Eames Office, it doesn't say 'fake' to me.

La Fonda"esque"
Nice spot on La Fonda guys. After careful review and inspection too I really think it's somehow connected to the La Fonda base with its dimensions and teardrop legs. Like an in-between with the aluminum group base.
This is definitely a job for Eames Office/HM. Will keep you updated...
Thanks again. Been great hearing from you all.

I went
I went on a LaFonda hunt, but couldn't find any that had a single column. They all had the 4 separate columns joined to the legs.
Which makes me wonder if this might be a....P-word object.

Unbelievable...
Hey gang,
Thank you all so much for your time and effort with this. I can't thank you enough.
I've been speaking with Graham Mancha and he believed it to be legit and undisturbed. Similar to stuff in the Time-Life Building in NY and likely preceding the "universal base." I never have come across the Girard/Eames stuff and certainly that leaves me shocked and humbled. It's my first Eames. What a story this will be. So of course, no selling Heath.
Still work to do I guess to identify it once and for all. No ceramic on the top and the black cast on the base is about the only difference. Eerily similar to what you guys have come up with and those legs are dead on.
Amazing.
Thanks again everyone. Hope to continue the hunt a little more.

I would replace (but keep) the top on yours, its really a bit blah, no offense meant.
It a really nice base and reminds me of the Sina chair, I think it suits a stone circular top, something a bit better than edge banded chipboard anyway.

Not prototype
... but an earlier version of the universal base as seen on many of the Time-Life chairs.
Still can be a nice table. I'd keep the original top, but would not use it myself. I'd replace the top if I were going to use it, either with a vintage top or fabricate a new one. I'm just not a fan of the faux wood-grained laminate. If you can not find a vintage top you like, you could easily make a round or square top out of solid colored laminate, or stone, or slate, real wood, any of which could be quite handsome.
