I have got a coffee table dating from the 70s signed "Chervet". I did my google search, but I found no information about that artist. A lot of antique dealers selling similar tables attribute it to Léon François Chervet. But it is obviously not him, since Léon François Chervet did very classical sculptures and lived in the XIXth century... Any information welcome! Thanks in advance.

Yes and I believe Alain Chervet made the original and glamorous Ibex table that is so much copied.
There is also a version with 2 of these eagles and glass top which is a fairly rare.
The quality and craftsmanship is amazing.
Hey gogo please post an image of your signed coffee table as it would be nice to see it.

It can seem kitsch in the average home but so can a Picasso.
Regardless how good a piece you have it looks like nothing if the rest of your home or room is not done properly.
I will take the designer ladies interior any day over a bland room with cheap teak retro whatever it's called.
Then again maybe it's an aquired taste so that means some people will just have to look at more.
hmmmmm
"Regardless how good a piece you have it looks like nothing if the rest of your home or room is not done properly."
I would say that this statement is not simply wrong: it's tellingly wrong.
a great piece of furniture is a great piece of furniture, whether or not its owner chooses to employ the services of an interior decorator.
of course, a room can be well or poorly arranged; but when decorators praise what somebody upthread aptly called "expensive kitsch," they reveal the logic of their profession, the logic behind what counts as "proper," rather too nakedly.
Vinny,
In general...
Vinny,
In general yes.
What we think is a great piece may always be a great piece in any environment because we have an eye for certain things in our style.
They may be known pieces commonly seen or with a certain look or lines that people with that MCM preference desire.
In a room full of junk is an old antique chair a great piece or an old eames shell.
That Ibex table would be overlooked by most people in the back of a used furniture store but used in the right way it's fabulous. It also commands big dollars especially if an original Chervet but it's difficult to place in the average home.
I had a spectacular vintage Danish sofa delivered at home.Seeing it coming off the truck I said it looked like a piece of junk.It looks nothing like it does in the gallery store all set up nice.
The removalist laughed and said that most people say the same thing and that is a bit of my point.Pieces need certain amount of room and the right placement to do them justice and the majority of people do not. That does include me.
