All this talk about the most comfortable easy chair has gotten me sketching the chair I'd like and it occurs to me that I'd like a chair with Temperpedic foam like the mattresses I've tried. Is there anywhere a person could buy some to use for the seat and back cushions in a one off custom chair?
Also, the stuff is ungodly expensive in mattresses. Is there a cheaper generic foam with similar characteristics, or do you have to get the real thing to get the real experience?
I imagine
I imagine much of the cost is due to thre Research & Development of the foam?
I should think covering such a foam for upholstery would be tricky, no fabric would have the same poroperties, so would inevitably look a bit of a mess ..
A flat sheet on a flat surface - i.e a bed is a much easier proposition
Also try Foam Order
Maybe Foam Order http://www.foamorder.com in SF will sell it. I know they sell latex foam.
if you have ever worked on...
if you have ever worked on chairs
The molding and folding will be very difficult, when you use foam you outline the chair and staple or glue what ever you need to do.then put poly on after that , This stuff is heavy heavy, hard to cut and impossible to mold(now someone will say they did it and love it ) but for the most part very heavy stuff. best bet stick with good quality foam you will be real happy with it. If you have a small chair and want just the seat this would work for that but for a big chair no way. trust me on this one i think i know what i am talking about,
I'm building my own easy chair and ottoman...
Its part of my "design addiction." 🙂 I'm getting older and I'm not going to be able to buiild things for myself forever, so this is a gift to me from me.
Regardless, I just need two rectangles of memory foam: one for the seat cushion and one for the back. The chair will have a single, fixed seat back rake. The seating position will not be markedly different from typical Danish Modern angles and surface proportions. The back and butt cushions will rest on flat, rectangular surfaces and so will appear flat until sat upon.
I might also create two rectangular arm rests, but I will decide that once the chair is finished without the arm rests and I have sat in it.
Also, my design allows for the memory foam to be glued to easily replaceable hard, fixed, back and seat surfaces. That way, should the memory foam eventually get Alzheimers, I don't have to scrape it off and reglue new memory foam; rather, I can just buy new foam and cut a new back and seat panel, glue the new foam on, and reattach back and seat to my chair. Ideally, I would like some memory foam that would outlive me, but life, and design, invariably involve trade-offs, do they not? 🙂
I'm thinking of my chair the way one would think of a custom built bicycle, or custom tailored suit. I want to create chair dimensions that are as close to perfectly satisfying to me, as I can.
And if my chair sucks, well, I can always save the cushions for exercise pads for my garage floor. 🙂
I'm kind of surprised this question has prompted so much debate about everything, but where to buy the memory foam.
I'm really just trying to find out how I can get a small quantiy cut to a specific size, as one buys glass, or if I have to buy a big quantity and cut it myself. And where of course.
