Bertoia Side Chairs
I have many vintage Bertoia chairs in my home and would never pay $600 for one!!! DWR is outrageous!
I never walk through the doors of DWR because I just can't understand the cost of a lot of their products. One day I decided to take a peek inside. I saw the current-day Bertoia side chair and was turned off. In my opinion the new ones are now (for lack of a better word) "sporty" looking and not as timeless. If you compare the curves, wire gauge, and connections of the vintage chair and current-day chair, you'll notice a big difference.
I guess you can even go as far as contrasting the typical modern person today versus the typical modern person of the 1950-60's. Today's modern person is more sporty than 60's modern person.
I've had too much coffee this morning:)
I guess that's why I'm a midcentury enthusiast!
I hear ya... Orleans
I hear ya Orleans, prices for midcentury furnishings are outrageous! Quite frankly it kind of pisses me off how ridiculous the asking price is for not only "new" pieces but the vintage... old stuff as well.
Hey, I'd love to find 4 Bertoia chairs - white, in good condition to use on my outdoor courtyard at a reasonable price. Fat chance!
That's why
I got myself educated and bid on stuff on eBay. The only 'new' pieces I bought was a square Eames work table (because I couldn't find a used one) and proper Knoll vinyl seat pads for my pair of yellow Bertoia side chairs (which I got on eBay)!
Oh, any I bought a pair of Richard Schultz 1966 dining chairs in black, a large white Schultz dining table and a Petal side table (in Mahogany) directly from Richard Schultz for a fraction of their normal prices because the chairs were a discontinued color, the table had a couple of small rust marks under the table top, and the Petal table in Mahogany was an experiment that was discontinued!
All of my clocks, furniture and other furnishings were found on eBay, local stores, or at websites selling used mid-century modern.
Because I educated myself first (by buying a bunch of books), I was smart enough to avoid buying any knockoffs (other than a few i KNEW were knockoffs).
You can find your Bertoia chairs on eBay for a fraction of what Knoll's distributors are selling them for.
