Picked this up yesterday... looks like a walnut chair with a really lousy stain job. Under the chair there are two stamped letters: K I or K L Look like a few baumritter chairs I've seen. Am i right? Any ideas?

Yes, Baumritter. Be aware that (in my experience) there is a significant range in the quality of wood that Baumritter used on their chairs. I've had solid walnut Baumritters that were fairly well constructed, and at the other end of the spectrum I've had chairs that seemed to be cobbled together from three different types of (low quality) wood. If you decide to refinish, I'd recommend testing an inconspicuous spot first and possibly consider using dye rather than stain. Best of luck!
