Why is it that the owl is so often rendered in mid-century decorative objects and design? Of course the owl also great fodder for kitsch too, but I have yet to see any pigs frogs kittens hounds much in the mid- century style.

Here's an owl I bought at auction in a lot of mostly junk, and it wasn't too cheap, but I thought is was a fine piece.

Please share your owls! I haven't seen any threads yet devoted to this.

Owls belong very much to the 70s
I pitched a book a while ago.. Zoomorph, about how certain animals define decades
Poodles 50s, Greyhounds 20s, owls 70s, dolphins 80s, afghan hounds 60s etc. etc.
Wasn't taken up..no doubt someone will appropriate the idea now 😉

what about BIRDS? they're everywhere too. not just the eames bird. also CATS.
Personally, I think the midcentury preoccupation with animals is a little sad.
I prefer abstracts and impressionist nudes.

It's
not a 'midcentury preoccupation' it's been a preoccupation of mankind since we could first make pictoral and sculptural representations.

Its the mud monster from Mystery Island, if anyone has any idea what I'm talking about please confirm it, after fruitless googling I'm thinking I might be imagining it.
Or is it Captain Caveman?
Captain Caveman's powers include super-strength, a variety of useful objects hidden inside his fur, and a club that allows him to fly and from which pops out different tools he uses to fight crime...I think I'm in love.

captain caveman
Thanks for this. I cannot remember the last time I have heard these words uttered. I have not even thought of this character for half of my life, I think. I love when this happens.

OK robert, you're right. I think I just mean that the midcentury rendering of animals always looks juvenile and naive.

Never tire of seeing David Bowie in tights 🙂 I love Labyrinth. One of my favorite childhood movies.
One the note of owls, I have a really nice C. Jere owl sitting on a credenza. I'll see if I can locate some pics of it. And nothing wrong with owls and cats. I have several mid-century cat pieces of art around my place. I love kitty cats so hence the cat pieces.
