Something
Something textured and nubby would contrast the aluminum. Something smooth and vinyly would compliment it. It's an odd enough looking chair that you could accentuate that with a bright color...green, red, orange. What type of wood are the armrests? That could influence the color choice.
Great Chair!
I personally think that this chair is great and it would not cost that much to have recovered, at least in the UK if you go to the right place.
Design comes in many different shapes and forms, this chair has a lot going for it with its elegantly shaped legs, aluminium frame, textile and lovely wood arms! It looks Italian to me, but they probably borrowed design characteristics from Italian designers - Ico Parisi...
Perhaps an Italian designer that worked with Thonet to create this fab chair?
Thonet was also used by Le Corbusier for his LC series sofas and chairs, as well as Pieff UK and many others.
Thonet were renowned for bending things well I guess?
Each to their own, some like modern, some like old, some like wood, some like glass and metal, some like frills..
Personaly, I love it!
Thanks Jinx. I really like...
Thanks Jinx. I really like it too. Just curious, what would it cost you to reupholster this in the UK? I think I'm most likely going to do it in a smooth vinyl. The more I think about it, fabric doesn't feel right. I've been thinking of an apple green color recently. Not sure. I'm planning to go to the local upholstery guy and take a look at what he's got.
Was having a nosey through Lauritz and...
... saw these! Think they're the same as yours?

Jinkx- My dad photographed the Thonet Exhibit at the NY MOMA -mid 50's
My dad, S.C. Valastro was hired to photograph the NY MOMA display of chairs called the Thonet Exhibit. I assume it was in the mid 50's. When I have the time, and figure out how to digitize the color 3D slides i will post a shot or two here. The room is full of chairs and objects made of wood to steel to "plastic". From traditional chairs to ultra modern.
