I just picked up this chair. The tag underneath is marked Thonet. I think it's pretty interesting. It needs to be reupholstered. The armrests are wood and the metal underneath them is aluminum. The legs are chrome. Anyone know anything about it?

No one? Okay, how about this: what color and type of fabric would you suggest to re-upholster it?

Something
Something textured and nubby would contrast the aluminum. Something smooth and vinyly would compliment it. It's an odd enough looking chair that you could accentuate that with a bright color...green, red, orange. What type of wood are the armrests? That could influence the color choice.

The wood is light and...
The wood is light and natural, maybe birch? So you think a wool type fabric would be too much of a contrast? Now that I think about it, I don't know if I've ever seen that with aluminum and chrome. Maybe a burnt orange in smooth vinyl?

Great Chair!
I personally think that this chair is great and it would not cost that much to have recovered, at least in the UK if you go to the right place.
Design comes in many different shapes and forms, this chair has a lot going for it with its elegantly shaped legs, aluminium frame, textile and lovely wood arms! It looks Italian to me, but they probably borrowed design characteristics from Italian designers - Ico Parisi...
Perhaps an Italian designer that worked with Thonet to create this fab chair?
Thonet was also used by Le Corbusier for his LC series sofas and chairs, as well as Pieff UK and many others.
Thonet were renowned for bending things well I guess?
Each to their own, some like modern, some like old, some like wood, some like glass and metal, some like frills..
Personaly, I love it!

Thanks Jinx. I really like...
Thanks Jinx. I really like it too. Just curious, what would it cost you to reupholster this in the UK? I think I'm most likely going to do it in a smooth vinyl. The more I think about it, fabric doesn't feel right. I've been thinking of an apple green color recently. Not sure. I'm planning to go to the local upholstery guy and take a look at what he's got.

After pics
Here's some after pictures. I had the chair reupholstered in a wasabi green smooth vinyl. I polished up the aluminum and chrome. I've stripped the wood armrests but still need to finish them. I like the way it turned out.

Jinkx- My dad photographed the Thonet Exhibit at the NY MOMA -mid 50's
My dad, S.C. Valastro was hired to photograph the NY MOMA display of chairs called the Thonet Exhibit. I assume it was in the mid 50's. When I have the time, and figure out how to digitize the color 3D slides i will post a shot or two here. The room is full of chairs and objects made of wood to steel to "plastic". From traditional chairs to ultra modern.
