after 5 years Alphaville is stepping up to the plate and making disclosures
sorta makes you wonder if someone is putting some heat on them
The above chair is Alphaville Design's Exposition Chair. It is not the "Barcelona chair" (TM) by Knoll. We are not affiliated with Knoll Inc. Patents for this 1929 design have expired long ago.
Copyright 2003-2007 Alphaville Design, Inc. All rights reserved. Alphaville Design products are not manufactured by or affiliated with B&B Italia, Cassina, Charles and Ray Eames, Classicon, Fritz Hansen, Herman Miller, Isamu Noguchi Foundation, Knoll, or Le Corbusier.
I bet the lawsuits will be flying very soon they have been a very gutsy
company for a long time and skirted as close as they can to the original design.... The Exposition chair looks great but we know what it is ..
Notice something else...
nothing that nowhere on their website are they promoting the items they are having produced in China?
No list of products.
Just a note that they're no longer selling on thi9s website and to go see a dealer...but, then again, they don't list their dealers, etc.
Hot Damn....what a company!
Sure make me want to plunk my greenbacks down....N O T
hey barry
ouch barry...
my clients can't afford knoll. they love the aesthetic... but just can't afford it. installing 200 chairs at $5000 a pop for the premium knoll version ($1,000,000) versus $1000 a pop for alphaville's ($200,000), it makes sense for them to go with alphaville. i have a reputation to keep up with my design and hospitality clients... and only alphaville fits the bill when it comes to high end at a price... i can stay on budget and win more projects
i won't specify cheap shit from zuo, eurostyle, or white on these jobs i get... stuff that probably winds up on ebay or overstock.com. gordon maybe... but they want to sell at knoll's prices. by the way, have you checked out the crap on overstock.com? search barcelona chair...
http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Barcelona-Black-Leather-Chair/10835...
http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Pavilion-White-Leather-Chair/228754...
they seem to have deleted all the negative posts from their customers about the broken buttons and frame scratches
these guys sell shit, k/d frames, buttons falling off, and they exploit the barcelona name. alphaville does not. if there is a lawsuit, overstock.com is a huge high profile public target with a lot of bucks that knoll should go after. gross misuse of trademark names, in my opinion.
have you seen alphaville's chair against knolls in person like i have? i don't understand your beef. did they screw up your order?
stepping up to the plate
hey lrf
this is the message we got from alphaville on 9/15:
"Dear Customers,
It has come to our attention that some of you are selling our
reproductions using trademark names from other companies. This causes
confusion in the market place. Please discontinue this practice today or
we will be forced to stop shipping to you until the corrections are made.
Our products are unique to us. We make a chair called the Exposition Chair
(aka Mies Pavilion). Please do not reference our chair as a "Barcelona
chair" or "Barcelona-style" chair. We do not make the Barcelona chair and
we are not affiliated with Knoll in any way. We recommend that you add
disclaimers in your advertising of these products as advised by your legal
counsel.
By the way, we had a recent return of a low quality knock-off. The
Pavilion chair frame was complete broken. Upon closer inspection (RA), we
discovered that this was NOT our chair! It used thinner 3/8" (10MM) steel
and lower grade stainless steel. It did not have our secret frame marks
and proprietary sewing techniques. Another give away was that this frame
was not fully welded, but rather "bolted" together with the bolts hidden
inside the straps. Alphaville's Exposition chair is fully welded into 1
solid single frame. And we use premium 1/2" (12MM) thick Korean #304 (8%
nickel) which has less sand particulate than Indian, Taiwanese or Chinese
#304. The result is that Alphaville Design's chair is smoother, shines
better, resists rust and lasts longer. Please do NOT switch-a-roo a
competitor's product to get money/credit from us. That is not a nice
thing to do. Soon, we will post images to our website exposing our
competitor's products from China, South America and even Italy, and that
Alphaville Design is the ONLY trusted brand name out there for a high
quality reproduction chair.
Caveat emptor! Let the Buyer Beware. Alphaville Design's Exposition
chair (Mies Pavilon) chair is extremely high quality. Yes, we have many
competitors and we believe that most or ALL are lower quality than ours...
detail for detail. This is a bold statement, but we are confident that it
is true. We welcome any consumer product or lab testing against our
competitor's similar product. See attached for DETAILED FEATURES of our
Exposition Chair.
Best,
Your friends at www.AlphavilleDesign.com"

thanks hey there
thanks for the post. I have several of the Exposition chairs in my office and i have said from day one they are great.... I have a set of 70 knoll barcelonas in my home for years and it is hard to tell the difference. other than one is new and the other 35 years old,
One thing about Alpaville they do make good stuff they do put lots of thought in to there reproductions not like a lot of other Chinese crap. I have bought from them for our offices and i think their stuff is just fine for what it is,
We sell Alphaville Exposition chairs
We sell the Alphaville Exposition chair at our store (as well as Barcelona Style chairs from other manufacturers) - we have done a lot of research and there is no doubt in our mind's that Alphaville's chair is the best quality available (outside of Knoll).
This is a reproduction that we really trust. It gives us less trouble than any other.
Very Sincerely,
M
