sorry i had the image to large this is the lafonda in my wifes office with a chadwick sofa and a eames coffee table i love the lafondas they were perhaps one of the greatest chairs eames ever designed, with the help
of Girard .The greatest contract for Girard was the Braniff airways contract it allowed him to do so many wonderful creative things that properly never would have happened and changed the way corporate America viewed their design image,

we did redo a chair just l...
we did redo a chair just like number three on this site.
we used a solid from Maharam fabric and the name was medium 4634090 we did that in Black but they call in rowen 001
and on the front side we did that in Checker 459830
by Alexander Girard, in black and white. of all the chairs we did that one turned out one of the best as the customer said do it like you think Girard would have done it , and she was very pleased.
I had a camera malfunction that day and never did get a shot, but on my next trip to San Fransisco , I will go and get a picture,

Having had the privilage ...
Having had the privilage of seeing several pieces of Girard furniture over the years and i have always stated that i love his stuff.
I think a real easy analogy of his furniture would be like saying Girards stuff was to Herman miller line like the Edsel was to the Ford line .
Although Girards stuff was way cool
but it always had a feel of a idea here from Eames and a idea here from Nelson,
Sander as all his friends and associates called him was a genius for color, and they loved him , He got the commission on his own from the Lafonda del sole and took it to home base Herman Miller and Charles and Ray Eames to design the Lafonda chair,
Contrary to what some has said the side shell was first as that was the dinner chair at the Resteraunt and shorthy after the armshell back was introduced.
the arm shell was used in lots of office applications and with coasters,
After Miller associates liked the new stand it was designed along with several of his designs only to be short lived in the commercial success of Herman Miller products, but Braniff loved his stuff and continued using it through the early 70's when every thing went out of production. for a new look by the
clothes designer Halston and Puccci, but it was Girard who came up with the idea to paint the planes multi color when most were using aluminum color, The single best idea for identifying the Braniff airways.

i saw a lafonda table, s...
i saw a lafonda table, small with the lafonda base and a slate top today at a store, I told the owner that i thought that Charles Eames actually designed the base with the assistance of Girard , does any one know if this is really true? cause
everyone knows that he had the contract with the Lafonda resturant to due, every thing from soup to nuts, but His style of furniture does not reflect that base at all.
that why i think it was a Eames project, with Girard as a collaborator.

LaFonda furniture
The beautiful chairs and tables have always been described as as being designed by Charles and Rae Eames. I have read that the commision was Girard's and he worked with Eames to make sure that Eames' designs fit in with Girard's vision. Girard, for example, asked if Eames could design a different chair shell to keep the top of the chair low, which Eames did.
So, if everything I have red is correct, the Eameses designed the chairs and tables with input from Girard, and Girard was responsible for the fabric choices and the table top style.
However, when the LaFonda pieces became available separately from Herman Miller for public purchase if the table tops were Eames or Girard's design. I don't know specifically if black slate was ever used in the LaFonda installation, for example.
Nothing that I have read about Herman Miller's method of business ever indicated that there was anything other than total harmony between George Nelson, the Eameses and Alexander Girard.
Strange too.....all of the Herman Miller products made by Vitra are made under lisence agreement, yet, on those pieces that Herman Miller has passed on selling in the US (the Nelson tray table and the Eames LaFonda black slate coffee table, for example) Vitra has not or can not sell them in the US.
It's so weird...if Herman Miller doesn't want to sell them, then Vitra should be allowed to.
