Picked this vodder desk up the other day. The desk top and drawer fronts have been sanded (no, I did not do it). How can I save this? Should I take a fine sand paper and smooth out what has already been done. What can I put on it to get some color back into it?

The photos are small and blurry. This is begging for close ups.
Did they sand through the veneer anywhere? Please tell me I am not seeing a whole drawer front of particle board.....
Otherwise, raw teak is light colored, and just needs oil to bring out the expected color.
What are the spots on the top? They could be blemishes of one sort or another which need adressing, or they could be teak oil coming out of the fresh sanded veneer (teak does that), which wouldn't be a problem.
I prefer scraping with a razor blade to sanding, except for the final very fine grit sanding. So if there are burns or scrapes that need to be addressed, I would do it that way. And since there is no longer any patina conversation to be had, you might as well go full restoration if possible.

Those darks splatters on the top look like ink stains... maybe. If we can identify the substance, there might be a chemical way of removing it.

Leif
Sorry about the photos. The sun was setting and I only had my iPhone. I am pretty sure there was grain showing on the drawer fronts so I would assume it is still the veneer?
I couldn't let the piece go. Picked it up for $250. I really like the return portion of the desk and figured if the desk part wasn't salvageable I could put to use the other portion as it looks pretty nice on its own.
The seller said that the desk top was full of ink etc as his kids has been using it throughout their school years. Said he did some hand sanding with 220 some time ago which left it in the state I purchased it in.
I will take a bunch of close up detail shots and send them to you. If you are up for it, I would love it if you could possibly walk me through bringing the desk back. I welcome the input from the other DA members as well. Will have some photos this Thursday as I will be off from work

If there is is still teak grain everywhere then he didn't sand through. There is a funny light patch right of the most obvious ink stain in the photo that looks like it might be particle board. If you are very lucky he didn't sand through. But usually something gets dumped when someone thinks the piece is solid wood and goes at it with a sander and starts seeing particle board and realizes they have just screwed up, badly.
First step would be to make sure you still have teak veneer showing everywhere. If you don't the options are not pleasant: faux paint the spot, veneer patch it, or re-veneer a whole surface.
Ink stains might be susceptible to oxalic acid, I think it would depend on the type of ink. If chemical means don't get them out, maybe razor blade scraping might, just depends whether they go through to the particle board.
I wouldn't have been able to pass it up for $250 either.
