Hey folks.

I have an opportunity to purchase the chair linked below and need some advice about what to look for to determine it's overall "value". It's being offered for sale at about $80 and is marked Herman Miller both on the fiberglass and with a sticker. In my haste earlier today, I didn't take any photos of the underside of the chair as it wasn't the only thing I was distracted by at the time. If you're unable to see clearly, the seams are splitting along either side of the interior of the seat. Padding seems to be in good enough shape, however. Given the price, and recognition that some upholstery work would be required, would you still consider the chair a good value and worth purchasing? Is there anything I should be looking for in particular to make my evaluation easier?

Thank you all so much. I love the chair and would love to have one.

I disagree with woody...
I disagree with woody here.
The shell itself is crap and depending on when it was made it will either have 3 holes drilled into or have a non- shock mount style to mount the base Since its upholstered
The big thing is see that is worth it is that base. It looks like a great aluminum Group base that is worth more than the 80$. If it had been an h-base I would have said no
Get the chair and either strip it of the vinyl or buy just a bare fiberglass shell.
A black bare fiberglass shell with that same base went for 699$ on eBay. I can't help to think that that base added some $$ to it.
For 80$ I would buy it

.
The black shell that sold on ebay for 699 had the lower/wider, less common aluminum group base than the one pictured above.
There is value in this base, but it is much more common than the low base.
(The lower wider aluminum group bases may have been originally intended for the larger, high-backed Eames upholstered shells that never really took off.)

I have a base that is even lower than the one in that auction. Came out of a local college here in my town
I emailed modern conscience about it as it had a damaged spider mount when i got it and Amanda said mine was the 2nd one she had seen, besides the one in her private collection. Also couldn't find any pics of same height base online.
Here the pic of it

Yes I was also reminded of that base that you had shown on the "recent finds" thread. I just didn't want my post to get confusing.
I am guessing that your ultra low base might still be a version meant for the more rare high backed shells with thick padding. Perhaps there was a lounge version of that executive type chair?
There are a couple of avocado green chairs with a similar larger base on ebay right now, but they are indeed higher. I tried to link my last post to them but was unsuccessful.
Have you (or Amanda) ever seen your lower base with an as found original shell on it?

Sorry
Did not notice the base at first glance. Yes, the base alone is potentially worth more than $80, if your goal is to sell it.
