Hi all! I picked up these chairs from someone who said they bought them second hand and had them sprayed. I have a set that are marked Vitra, lightweight plastic. These however weigh around 11kg and are beasts! They seem to be made of fibreglass, but have no markings anywhere. Any chance they are old originals or are they just heavy knock offs? What do you think?
Hi @reamie, do we have Panton experts here? I don’t know. Maybe @minimoma? Or @objectworship?

Hi @Herringbone, thank you! I have to say I think I’ll keep them, the marked plastic Vitra ones I had often tipped over a bit easily. No chance of that with these! I’m presuming they’re reproductions, as surely there would be more wear to them if they were that old. I just can’t get over how heavy they are. However they’ll be fine for the garden!
Thanks @minimoma, I appreciate it! I think I have to put them down as a good quality repro. Any dates I can find of original heavy fibreglass versions just doesn’t tally with the condition for me. Sure, they have a few knicks and scratches but the condition still seems too good to be true! Damn though they are heavy! 😀
Besides being heavier, does the fiberglass version match the dimensions of the Vitra plastic set you have? Do they look like they used almost the same mold or do they vary? If your fiberglass chairs have those ribs under the seat, that could be good sign they are legit. If you have seen the metal molds to make these chairs, they are labor intensive to make & has to be flawless to produce a plastic chair that do not need refinishing when the chairs come out of the mold. I don't know if the recent Chinese copies invested in good expensive molds in making their replicas.
@minimoma they’re very well done, and seem to match well. However I found one place selling heavy fibreglass versions, and I think the curve of the backrest is a bit thicker than the Vitra plastic ones. I am coming to the conclusion that they’re not the real deal. I’m not a fan of reproductions but I do feel they may stay in my garden! The sheer weight makes them suit.
Sounds good to me Reamie.
