Hello i have bought 6 canned chairs, only one has a 'stamp' with an elephant holding a chair on it. Seems quite old. It looks like the Thonet model 18 but have no clue which company made it...It seems like it's written in italian or spanish "marca de frabica). Does anyone see this stamp before ? See attached stamp.
Yes, I'd agree with Browkin on this. Almost every country in Europe had its own bentwood furniture factory and after Thonet's patents ran out in 1869 many companies began making copies of their designs. Fabrica de Marca, I believe, essentially translates to "trademark" or "brand" . I did some searches but could not find any company with the elephant in their branding.
I have at home a book from Thonet. Thonet used in all their Labels Thonet brand name. No hint of an elephant.
One sticker (unfortunately from an unknown German or Austrian producer) used an elephant on their label „stable like an elephant“. It should point out, that the legs were extra reinforced and due to that the chair was more stable.
