Hello all.

I recently acquired these 2 rather special His and Hers mid century Armchairs, I've searched endlessly online and can not find anything quite like them, they are reminiscent of Adrian Pearsall in some aspects. The fabric is 1970's I believe.

Can anyone identify?

Your help would be so much appreciated.

Kind regards Jo

I've never seen those before and I don't have a clue as to who made them, though I'm sure they are much better quality than Pearsall. They're the kind of thing that inspired Pearsall's furniture.

Could you please post a well-focussed close-up or two of just the fabric? I would like to see one of the worn area on the front edge of the seat deck of the shorter one; seeing the base fabric where the nap is worn away will help figure out what the fabric is. It looks like a low pile of some sort, at least over most of the design.

The arms have an extra couple of curves to their surfaces---or planes? My knowledge of geometry in woodworking is way less than other peoples' here, but they look more complex than most.

Could you post a photo of the underside of the seat of one chair, too? There might be some clues there. Others will probably want closeups of the wood to ID it accurately.

Hi Spanky, thank you for the reply. I will take some more comprehensive pics, the fabric appears to be a low pile velvet and the arms do indeed have several planes, think they are carved from one piece.

Seen similar elements in many pieces but nothing indicate a certainty.

Will upload more pics this ago.

Thank you 🙂

Hi @spanky Please find attached more pics...close ups of worn areas of fabric and wood.

I think the wood is Teak? The fabric possibly a cotton velvet/velour almost like a silly towelling?

Arms are carved, in 2 pieces with several panes and angles. Also similar to Vladimir Kagan, but again can't find this design?

The lady we bought them from had the foam replaced a year ago, but had the original fabric put back on. There is no indication underneath of maker without removing fabric.

I'm super stumped!!!

Thanking you, Jo 🙂

OK, yes--velvet, probably cotton. Definitely a 70s design and colorway, and the tacked-on brown cambric under the chair indicates age, too. Most newer dustcovers are non-woven synthetic fabric. Staples became pretty standard a few decades ago though of course there are still people who use tacks, though probably mostly DIYers who don't want to invest in more expensive tools.

Anyway. Can't tell exactly what's going on here, but it looks like Pirelli rubber webbing...?? With big carpet tacks anchoring it.

Here's the large version of your photo of the wood arm:

Looks like teak to me, but I'm also not a wood expert.

Yes def an old velvet, although as I mentioned the fabric was put back on by a professional upholsterer when the padding was replaced a year ago so would have been re tacked and stapled then. Not sure if the webbing was replaced then too?

The fabric and webbing could easily have been changed at a later date, I would presume the chairs are 1960s or early 70's but no clue as to the designer. They are a pretty distinctive shape so I'm very surprised to be able to find anything like them 🙁
