Looks authentic to me. The upholstery is a horrible non-factory job.

They should be marked on the inside of the side rails. Maybe you could find a way to remove a part of the black fabric underneath the chairs to verify.

Ya, I'm thinking they're authentic as well. The fabric, I know - awful! Is there any way to know what era/decade they came from? I'd like to reupholster them to sell but am not sure how to describe them in the post or how much to list them for? Any ideas?

Finding the mark will help you date them. I don

You can determine what to ask for them by checking what they have sold for online. Don't go by what sellers ask for them because that's often not what they eventually sell for. You could also get an appraisal from a qualified appraiser who knows MCM furniture. This forum's focus is on design and not appraising.

If you're going to reupholster them, go ahead and strip off what's on there so you can see the marks.

I think black vinyl was used on these originally and dealers have told me that it's what sells best Personally I would go with a good Danish wool in an appealing neutral color (or non-neutral if I was keeping them for myself!) but a lot of people prefer the easy care of vinyl.

Look at how the upholstery is done here: https://www.designaddict.com/forum/General-discussion/Moller-Model-75-che...

The upholstery material is wrapped around to the inside of the seat rails, then stapled in a neat, straight line across. Then you trim the excess close to the staples (which should be pretty much end to end, very little to no space between) and cover the staples with black tape about 5/8" to 3/4" wide. I think gaffer tape is the closest thing to what was used originally. Black cloth bookbinding tape used to be sold all over but now it's vinyl. Don't settle for black masking tape; it doesn't hold very well and the last thing you want is strips of tape hanging down from under the chair seat!

If you're redoing them to sell and you need to maximize profit, black paper cord will set you back a lot. It's pricey stuff.

And I'd argue it's not necessarily got the widest appeal. The natural cord is a great call, but it's not miles cheaper.

But whatever happens you need to ditch that reupholstery job, it's pretty upsetting. I wouldn't be surprised if you removed the 'dust cover' they've put on, which looks like black tarpaulin material, you might find the original dust cover underneath.

I'd do them in leather, but that's the most expensive option, so ignore me!

So that black cloth underneath is indeed the original dust cover.

If you were to strip this chair down, the layers would be as follows:

Suede/material on top

A layer of foam glued

Straps stapled

Finally the dust cover stapled at he bottom most of layers.

If the foam is still in okay condition, you could probably just replace the suede with a fabric as a low cost recovering. Your only issue is if the straps don't feel good, and you can tell by sitting on it if there's some give in them. If they feel bad, I personally think it's important to replace these as they put imbalanced pressure on the frame - also eventually they'll all break and someone will fall through the chair.

Cording now would require removing quite a lot of staples as a prerequisite to even starting. Not to try to deter you! Just pointing out options, given that the original dust cover is there.

And it is definitely a Moller stamp, it's a fairly late stamp but I probably shouldn't try to be any more specific than that, because I don't know. I'd like to say late 70s though. There we go, I've been more specific.

Kyle

@ Leif. I stand corrected - Rio Rosewood has been listed as an endangered species since 1973 but banned since 1992 only.
