Does anyone know if this is Milo Baughman? 1st Dibs (I know) shows one that sold as Baughman. I've searched everywhere and I can't find another chair like this, which leads me to believe it's not. I've Google searched every permutation of MSM, Danish Modern, Walnut, Barrel Back, High-Back, Peabody, Nemschoff and found nothing. Thanks for your help. Mel

Try searching MCM, instead of MSM to start. I am not sure I would describe this as a "barrel-back" lounge chair, but it is not that far off the mark. Also, if it were Milo Baughman, it would most likely have been produced by Thayer Coggin, as they did most of his walnut chair designs. He also worked with Mode Furniture, Glenn of California, The Inco Company, Pacific Iron, Murray Furniture of Winchendon, Arch Gordon, Design Institute America, George Kovacs, Directional, Henredon and Drexel.

At the end of the day, I think it is unlikely that you will find any believable attributions for this chair, unless you can find some older catalogs from one of the above producers, or a marked chair. You really need to take any info on the internet with a grain of salt, and only use trusted sources for attribution (1st Dibbs is not even close to trusted).

Good luck.

Look, here is a carcass, I found online, some terapeak site, the back

extension looks gone, but it's the same frame.

it says MAKER: Milo Baughman, so no help,

the Baughman thing is a problem now, because unless it is clearly marked, everything

is Baughman. My local craigslist is filled with "Baughman" stuff, pretty much anything

with glass, chrome, fabric, wood, leather, brass...well just everything. They are now

switching to Pearsall, any old sofa from the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's gets reupholstered and

magically becomes designed by Pearsall.

1st dibs is full of bona fide crooks. It has a 3-4 sets of

chrome bar stools I have out in the garage, marked as Baughman, selling for

$3,200. They are actually made by CAL-STYLE, mine are labelled, but pretty close,

except for being much lighter, with much nastier welds, with little round balls

on the from bottom to keep them from falling over.

You could probably say attributed to Milo Baughman, which I guess

is really saying that other people have said it's a Baughman,

semantics.

Oh, forgot he added a pic of "what this will look like after reupholstery",

it really looks like they just ripped off the back part to me? Maybe

they were just different models?

I completely agree on the use of Milo Baughman (along with Wegner, Juhl, Eames, McCobb) as an attribution, it is getting to the point of being disgusting ....

That said, the chair in question does look to be solid walnut (frame). There is the zig-zagged finger joint on the back rail, that joins different parts of the curved back, which is a higher-end type of joinery (think Wegner's Round Chair). This same joint is used on my walnut MB chair, Thayer Coggin, Cooper model; which coincidently was not marked, but is so unique in design and construction, it was easy to match to marked pieces, and TC literature. It is also still being produced by TC, albeit with different back stringers. The construction is pretty good quality on the OP chair, and I would say that it is certainly plausible that the chair in question is a TC model. But dont get too excited yet, there is a lot of work to do to get to an actual MB attribution. You will need to search the internet relentlessly, and only trust actual TC literature, marked examples, etc. as trustworthy sources.

Thank you everyone for your comments. So very helpful.

The pair of chairs pictured by Stig were sold on 1st Dibs by the same dealer as the one pictured below. I emailed the dealer to see how he vetted them, but no reply. Messaged Thayer Coggin with pics thru Facebook - (they don't list any emails on their contact page - strange.) But haven't heard back.

(Obvious typo on the MCM in my 1st post-oops)

Zephyr - the finger joinery was what had me leaning towards MB. I know that EVERYTHING now is attributed to him.

The search continues.

Again - thanks so much. What a great community. Mel

Wow - about 5 minutes after I posted the above comment TC messaged me via facebook. They said they could not find that chair in their archives.

More detective work necessary. Thanks again!

Hello —I have the same chair you were trying to find the provenance of back in 2017.  Did you?

I have seen the chair attributed to Lawrence Peabody in quite a few places. There is also a shorter back version.
