I recently bought a chair and have been told it was a M/S model 30 but I’ve also been told it was a Kofod Larsen. Are there distinguishing characteristics to look for to tell them apart?

The distinguishing characteristic is that Ib Kofod Larsen never designed any such chair. There is no Kofod Larsen chair to distinguish. That is entirely a false story propagated by the internet.  It is a Madsen & Schubell production.

Thank you for that clarification! Another question I have is the fabric that was used to cover. The only pics I can find show it in leather. Were these offered in fabrics other than leather? Mine does look to have been recovered in the past. Thanks for any help!!

According to my 1962 Excellent Furniture Co. catalog, wherein the MS30 was offered along with Aasbjerg’s own production, the price for a fabric covered MS30 was $138 USD, while genuine leather was $188.

On a related note, it should be said that there is no distinguishing characteristic for an “Arctander Clam” chair.  Arctander did not design the Clam chair so there is no Arctander chair to distinguish.  The Clam was designed by Arnold Madsen.  Paustian produces new Clams following Arnold Madsen’s design but without the permission of Arnold’s heir and miscrediting them to Arctander.

Likewise, with the Oda Chair, there is no distinguishing characteristic for a “Ditzel Oda” chair.  Nanna Ditzel did not design it, so there is no chair to distinguish.  The Oda Chair was designed by Arnold Madsen.  Brdr. Petersen produces the chair today and used to use the incorrect credit (which was widely considered true), but now uses the correct credit and has permission from the heir or Arnold to produce it.

So, as you can see all of Arnold Madsen’s designs, in fact all of the Madsen & Schubell designs were at one time appropriated to other designers and in some cases of particular monetary value, like the Clam especially, and the Oda chair somewhat, and rarely this MS30 chair the transition to accurate information has been slow and difficult for some people.

What Leif said.

I could also ad MS 6 which is often credited to Aksel Bender Madsen and has been reproduced by a company called Polls Potten without permission.
