Another listing on Pomono attributing to Jalk:
https://www.pamono.co.uk/coffee-table-by-grete-jalk-for-poul-jeppesen-1950s
This one listed by a Canadian seller attributes to Vodder.
I'm always skeptical of seller attributions. Maybe someone on here has some documentation from Jeppesen to confirm.
Interesting. In this thread from 2016 it sounds like you are discussing the same leg design but the pictures are gone. You mention a catalog that says items were designed by Tanier. I think the attached picture (taken off Pinterest) was from this thread.
In this later thread in 2017 you mention that Tanier was just the retailer, but maybe that was just in reference to this chair. Did Tanier design as well?
Thanks
I think i found the original thread with higher res pictures here:
http://old.designaddict.com/forum/General-discussion/George-Tanier-Selection-table-found-thrift-shop
I didn't realize there was this separate URL for the "old" Forum.
furnitureindex.dk is a great resource I was also unaware of.
@Herringbone Thanks, I was unaware the old threads with pictures were available at that URL. That will be very helpful in the future.
Apart from the "Designer: George Tanier" note in that 1953 Furniture Forum, is anyone aware of a reference (besides auction and seller attributions) to George Tanier being a designer? Everything I found listed him as a importer, distributor, or retailer. The ads and catalogs for his New York business available online list many of the designers he carried, such as Vodder and Jalk, but do not include him in the list of designers.
It's odd he would design one or two tables (with same leg style as Vodder's) and then nothing else. It seems more likely that Vodder designed all of these and the note in Furniture Forum was a typo and has led to this confusion. The Danish Furniture index does have the one table (T7, round 24") as designed by Tanier with the source as "Tanier Catalogue". Does anyone have access to any of the Tanier catalogs? That could help clear this up.
I have been told he was both retailer and had pieces made for the American market to his designs .
However I have not found any evidence of that on line. I wouldn't expect any of the Danish manufactures would be willing to copy details from Vodder or Jalk for a retailer.
Interesting. Perhaps the answer will emerge yet.
I came across the death notice for George Tanier from the NY Times:
TANIER-George I. October 17, 1917-July 6, 2001. Importer of Danish furniture for half a century and founder of Design Selections International, Inc. Survived by his wife Inger-Marie Tanier of Croton On-Hudson, New York, son Jeffrey Tanier Berg of Cambridge, MA, daughter Nanna Tanier of Malverne, NY, and his sisters Eva Hindus of Newton, MA. and Roma Konefsky of Brooklyn, New York.
According to an online post, his wife Inger-Marie died in 2017. I reached out to their daughter Nanna to see if she might know whether her father designed these or any other tables. I'll let you know if she responds.
In your other thread I mentioned how people never seem to like the answer that George Tanier did design these tables. And the legs are not copies of an Arne Vodder design really. They show the same heavy influence from Finn Juhl that so many Arne Vodder designs show. (And yes, most times George Tanier is mentioned he is the retailer, but in this case he is also the designer). It will be interesting to see if the family offers any further information.
