When I first saw it, I thought that is a damn ugly chair, but the longer I looked the more beautiful it became and I had to have it. Bought on pure inuition, I have no idea who the maker could be. The seller told me that his Danish parents brought it to England in 1958. And that is all I have to go on. I will be picking it up from the seller on Thursday. Original fabric, I believe is actually in excellent conndition, we'll see. Does need a little TLC.

So anyone any ideas, it's so distinctive. (Not as tall as it looks, 96cm high, 64cm arm to arm, seat hight 34cm).

???

@m4r3x5p3ctr0n.

Carl Edward Matthes. If you do an image search you will find the low back version of this chair. The frame profile on your chair matches the lower chair. There are not many hits for the high back model.

The company still exists so you could contact them to confirm your chair is a Matthes design.

Thanks Lexi

Interesting, having done a google search I see something of a variation most Chairs described as Matthes chairs look very much like this Poul Hundevad https://www.danish-modern.co.uk/poul-hundevad-14h/

Except that it looks like the Matthes chairs have a straight back support and appears on many to be attached to the backrest with screws through from the the back - there does seem to be some variation in the models, perhaps they changed/adapted the design over time?

For example, attached is an image of 2 chairs both described as the Matthes 33a

Mine is definitely the highback version of the green one, whether it is Matthes or not.
I have taken your advice an emailed the company, it will be interesting, if they get back to me, what they say.

Thanks Lexi

I'm actually chatting with Torben Matthes, Carl's son on email at the moment.
What is interesting here is that by doing a Google search there comes up a great many chairs like the orange one above. Torben has confirmed that that chair is not a product of his father's design. In fact most of these chair seem to fit the profile of the Poul Hundevad as in the link I provided above.

It appears there may have been 33A and a 33B.
The 33A was provided as a complete chair but the 33B provided as basically a 'flat-pack' version of the same chair:
https://www.danish-modern.co.uk/matthes-polsterm%c3%b8belfabrik-33b/

If I am right on this then there is a lot more Hundevad chairs out there all mis-attributed to Matthes - which would make them only as rare as each other!

This for example this would be mis-attributed to Hundevad
https://www.pamono.co.uk/vintage-danish-blue-model-14l-armchair-from-poul-hundevad-1950s/

I've asked Torben for a little more information.

I'll follow-up

Phil

The 33B actually had metal legs - guess that would make it rarer than the wood ones : )
Torben says he has seen a great many of the orange chair and that they are definitely not by Matthes ...so interesting.... who are they by?

@m4r3x5p3ctr0n

 Did some further searching as the orange chair was familiar.

Found what looks like it.

Made by AS Lenestolfabrikken Solid.  Norway.

So the internet is full of mis-attributed chairs to Matthes when they should be to AS Lenestolfabrikken Solid, I see the similarities, but they are clearly not the same chair.

Thanks Lexi

@m4r3x5p3ctr0n. You are welcome.

At this point in time I think I am more familiar with Norwegian MCM furniture, than designs from other countries !! They have a great digital museum site.

Yes - actually, I really like Norwegian chairs - I have 10 Rykkens, 8 Ry-wings (restoring 3) (desperate to get my hands on a couple of onttomans (foot stools) for them, an early Kengu  without arms and a later Kengu with the straps style chair. Norwegian chairs can just be 'out there' in design - quite often very distinctive. Yes, I really like Norwegian chairs ; )

@m4r3x5p3ctr0n. I presume you are familiar with Mats Linder's site ? Mostly Norwegian  and some Danish  furniture catalogues as well as a lot of non furniture design. Worth looking through on a slow day!!

@m4r3x5p3ctr0n. Also , if you ever need to post an ID or other question about Norwegian chairs etc. try this FB page; Forum for mobelhistorie. Anyone can join ( or you can just go through the posts)What is good is that former and current owners/employees/employers/designers often contribute as well as family members of the aforementioned. Needless to say there is a lot of repetition and dare I say it... "un-interesting stuff " to non Norwegians like you and I but what comes across is that they are very proud of their design heritage.

ps. that is where I found the catalogue reference to Lenestolfabrikken Solid.
