Hi Folks,
Im thinking about buying this piece for my own collection. Ive never seen anything like it and initially thought that it could be Swedish or Norwegian. Does anyone have any thoughts? I know I should just buy it if I like it but would be good to get more information if anyone had any.
Thanks Ed
I don't think the 6 legs are original. It's ostensibly by Kofod Larsen, with lots of online listings pointing to Fredericia having manufactured it. Which I don't know how much I trust.
Thanks @kyle-barrett, I am going to see it tomorrow so will check it out in detail. Thanks for the lead, will do some investigations before I go.
Best Regards, Ed
Thanks @andersen
A quick search on the furnitureindex.dk returns a few items for Kofod Larsen for Fredericia. One of the sideboards/chest of drawers has very similar drawer construction so maybe thats were the attribution has came from.
Im going to see it tomorrow so will know instantly (hopefully) if the legs are original. Will report back.
Thanks
Ed
I do not know whether this is or is not Kofod Larsen or “Fredericia” but there were TWO companies. Fredericia Furniture is the current name of the famous one, which produces Børge Mogensen designs. Back then it was Fredericia Stolefabrik.
The other “Fredericia” is who Kofod Larsen worked for, which was called Fredericia Møbelfabrik. Fredericia Furniture bought Fredericia Møbelfabrik decades ago and as I recall the families married too.
And yes, it caused confusion back then too, but it is a good illustration about how danish furniture company names and town names worked (Fredericia is actually a town).
There are plenty of marked Fredericia Møbelfabrik pieces out there on the internet. So if you post photos of the dovetails on the side of the drawer and closeups of the handles so that we can see construction, we can probably confirm or deny based on construction whether FM made it.
I am sure I have seen reliable attribution of Kofod Larsen designs to Fredericia Mobelfabrik, but not on this sideboard. It's that bizarre desk with the rhombus shaped drawer front. Very handsome design, I missed out on one last year over here in the UK.
Interestingly there's also a German company just called 'Fredericia' that produced mid century teak case goods.
There is no reason to think that someone added the other two legs later, it might just have been in two different versions, either they realized 6 legs were too much and they could save wood, or realized that four were too little and the sideboard would bend in time.
Thanks for your view @andersen, I tend to agree. It doesn’t look like anything has been altered.
Thanks again.
Ed
Here is a marked piece with the same drawer front construction. So yes, I would say that is Fredericia Møbelfabrik. https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/more-furniture-collectibles/bedroom-furniture/night-stands/ib-kofod-larsen-fredericia-moblefabrik-teak-nightstand-end-table-set/id-f_13701161/
