hi all,
i've looked at so many pictures of mid century modern lounge chairs that i think if i actually found a pic of the attached chair and it jumped out of the computer and punched me on the nose i still wouldn't recognise it !
it's stamped 61 underneath but otherwise no markings that i can see ... and i've looked !
if anyone recognises the chair then i'd really appreciate the help.
cheers,
bb

This is a weird out there kind of thought, but it instantly reminded me of Finn Juhl's Diplomat chair, had a sudden panic someone had sawn the legs off and tried to make it a small easy-chair. But I don't think the arms are right, and you can attest to the proportions.
Then I thoguht Guy Rogers and couldn't place it. as one.
I'll keep an eye out.
hi kyle,
thanks for your comments. i also see the resemblance to the diplomat chair however this definitely isn't one. the legs are round all the way down and not tapered at all, and the arm rests don't have the elegant curve that the juhl chair has.
i've attached a few more pics of the chair with the seat removed to see if that jogs anyone's memory. what is interesting about this chair is that the seat is attached by the base on to the front two lateral supports and does not rest on the back one so allowing for a little movement in the back rest.
thanks again for your comments!
cheers,
bb
have continued looking and found this pic on a german website but it has no information about the designer or manufacturer. the base is exactly the same as mine but the seat is different ... perhaps they were made as a pair (one for him and one for her) or perhaps they produced many different seats to go one one base.
still hoping that someone out there in the designaddictosphere will be able to help 🙂
cheers,
bb
billyboy, when you say the seat is different on your chair compared to the German one, do you mean yours has more padding? I am pretty sure yours was reupholstered at some point. The fabric is a chenille weave, not used much if at all in the 50s and 60s, but quite popular ever since the 1980s. The upholsterer appears to have added more padding, perhaps at the request of the owner who might have wanted a more cushy feel.
Or maybe you're talking about the webbing?
The back looks kind of overstuffed, too. Button tufting is very common and is a technique that all upholsterers know how to do, but that odd seam bisecting the back of the German one is not so common. I can imagine an upholsterer saying "screw it, I'm just gonna put a row of buttons on the back!"

hey spanky,
i was actually referring to the difference in height between the german chair and mine (and lu's).
the top section of the back appears higher on the german chair which led me to think that perhaps they were originally designed as a 'his and hers' pair ... but i suspect you are right about the reupholstery !
kyle, after years following this forum, i can definitely say that you're comments are rarely useless and there is definitely a Sven Ivar Dysthe vibe about this chair .. well spotted!
cheers all,
bb
So... I dug a little bit with my Sven Ivar Dysthe angle.
And I found this article about a temporary Dysthe exhibition back in 2013:

And the attached photo caught my eye. Still no model number, but that looks pretty darn similar to me.
Hah!
This explains the bizarre construction of the seat too.
It's the 'Rock Royal' by S.I.Dysthe, produced by Arnestad Bruk! Actually a rocking chair!

Interesting guy! There's a link at the end of the article to a book about him that you found, Kyle, including quite a few sample pages:
