Apologies for only have 2 poor quality pics. I have this single chair, the emblem says "JOHN STUART INC." and "GRAND RAPIDS / NEW YORK". Dug a little deeper, and I'm seeing it's actually an Arne Vodder chair? I've seen Model FD-186 floating around, but I don't know much about this stuff, to entirely honest.
Hoping for some guidance as to what I have on my hands, and, if possible, what it might be worth. The chair itself is in incredible condition, from the black leather seat to the cane/wicker backrest.
Thank you wonderful people!!
Design Addict expressly forbids asking for free evaluations, but you can search the internet for auction hammer prices to get an idea. For rarer pieces you may have to be patient and collect results over time to get the best idea.
Here's a screencap of the Danish Furniture Index listing for this chair:
Out of curiosity, design addict forbids to ask for estimating prices, but also users to comment on the market value of an item? I think the first one makes sense, as this forum would turn into a mess. But I would find the second one a kind of censorship... what would be wrong with saying that an (honest) price for that chair would be between 300 and 800 USD, at least to me?
Cheers
Ernest
Ernest--it seems like kind of a fine line there. Yes, sometimes a design discussion includes some talk about the market value of a piece but that's really a separate issue from all of the design aspects---who designed it, who produced it, when it was made, the materials used, the appearance, the functionality, etc.
Also, it kind of depends on whether it's someone who's got his heart set on getting a particular piece, who wants to know what he might expect to pay for it, vs. someone who inherited a piece or lucked into something, and wants to know what it's worth in case (!) he decides to sell it.
The main thing is to keep the focus on design, per the direction of the original owners of the site. I don't think that has changed.
