Hi folks,

another question to Arne Jacobsen chairs. Looking at these chairs online.

The seller says the chairs are from the 1950s and first edition of AJ series 7 chairs.

Might that be true? The chairs are not marked.

Thank you in advance for any info.

No, they are not first edition. I am not sure how to explain but on first edition serie 7 chairs the legs were not welded together as a X. Each of them were welded separately to a metal base attached to the chair.

This type of welding was used however for first editions of the 3103 (1957-1963).

Plus I don’t think first edition 3107 were upholstered anyway.

Hi DrPoulet, many thanks for your info. Would you say these chairs might belong anyhow to any edition of Arne Jacobsen or would you consider them as a bad copy of serie 7?

Hi Browkin.

Looking at the picture, they look right to me. What I find a bit off is that:

- they are not fully upholstered. I would expect them to be fully upholstered.

- the way the base is fixed to the shell + shock mounts.

- they lack the metal or plastic cap where the legs are attached to the base. This is the part that is usually marked.

I don’t really like upholstered serie 7 chairs so I have never taken a close look at them. Please take my opinion as what it is, just an opinion.

If they are copies they are very good ones. You should ask Fritz Hansen directly, they usually reply (might take a while with the current events).

Got an answer from FH today:

In regards to your question I can advise you that in order to be sure of the chairs originality it should have the FH stamp.  If it does not have that you should certainly doubt its originality.

Hi Browkin.
Thanks for that! I guess that’s a polite way to say they are not authentic...
