Weird brass sidetable. Italian? Help me out here!  

This table stood in a local secondhand shop today and catched my eye. The column featered some stylized figures, but the top seemed to heavy (literally) for the brassed construction.
Has anybody seen this type of thing before? It strook me as being Italian, I'm in Belgium though.

What do you make of this, worth buying (esthetically)?
We mainly have scandinavian, wooden furniture..
Could use a different top (being to heavy) although I like the type of stone.
