I bought this 8-armed chandelier yesterday (for $60) from a local seller, selling it as a "sputnik" ceiling lamp. Thought it would nicely tie together a few chrome-accented pieces of furniture that I have. My research on sputnik lamps however, didn't turn up anything that look like this one. The arms usually extend out at an angle, porcupine-style. I'm trying to figure out if this is from the 60's, or as my GF seems to think, if its an 80's style light fixture. Any clues as to its origins? (If it helps, its fairly heavy, so the quality is there).

No, not in the traditional...
No, not in the traditional sense. Sputniks tend to have multiple arms that radiate at various angles from an orbed shape center (see below) What you have there looks like a 70's Italian styled chandelier...may even be Sciolari.

Thanks, that's what I thought....
I told the seller the sputnik's I know of all have arms radiating at an angle, but she said she calls it a "sputnik" because of the multiple lights. So I guess me and my friend are both wrong; it's probably not from the 60's or 80's, but the 70's....
But now I'm wondering if it might be a Sciolari, because the model I found (below), seems a fancier rendition of what I have....

Be glad yours isn't a "sputnik"
Sputnik lamps are a cliché, along with starburst clocks, and Egg chairs. (Yes, the Egg chair's a beautiful thing, but a cliché nonetheless. Don't blame me, blame Madison Avenue.)
Your new lamp's better, regardless-- horizontal and vertical trump diagonal any day.

Thanks for letting me know, whc!
That makes me feel better about the lamp.... but worse, about the Wassily chair I bought today, to go with the light fixture. ('Hmm... wonder if the less popular gunmetal gray color it came in helps here...). Welp, can't have it all...
