Looking for help IDing a 1960s-70s modular shelving unit. The heavy steel uprights are slightly rectangular in cross section with drilled holes on opposite sides. The shelves have slots on their ends, the black metal half-moon shaped tabs go in the slots and a silver metal pin goes through the upright and holds the shelf in place. From the front you see the holes and pin heads on the front of the uprights. The uprights each have two sections and telescope to fit the ceiling height. It's all flat shelves, no cabinets or box elements. The previous owners hailed from Germany but I'm not sure where the system came from. Anyone recognize?

hi raibos,

i have the same shelves !

i am based in switzerland and you find a lot of these telescope shelving units on the second hand market but this particular set is one of the bset quality i have seen. unfortunately i have no idea who the designer is however i have seen wooden shelving units designed by dieter waeckerlin that have a similar groove system for holding the shelves in place.

the version i have has smaller shelves that have the groove central and then larger shelves with the grooves slightly off-centre (see pics), which is a really nice touch.

the set i bought was missing lots of pieces and i had to have most of the half-moon tabs made up.

also, most telescope shelving units like this have a central spring in each upright that helps hold the shelving unit in place. the version i have doesn't but perhaps it's just missing. does your's have springs ? if it does and you have any pics i'd love to see them !

cheers,

bb
