| Kyle, It sounds like your intensity and immersion in collecting was burning so brightly that it was only natural to expect a little cooling-off for a bit. And nothing can compete with that "first awareness" time in one's life-- that first wave of discovery when one thing leads to another and the learning curve is so high and fast that it's just like some kind of rush that lasts for years. For me a little "lag" in my intensity has happened twice in 30 years of collecting. It might just be one of those, so don't worry. As you have expressed, you're down, but ... | |||||

| I've never heard of Indonesian Rosewood, so, if that is not a typo, then I would be suspicious of this dealer's information. I somehow doubt that Møller would use different rosewoods such that a dealer would be able to tell the difference in casual photos. Rosewoods are famous for their varied appearance such that it can occasionally be hard to tell which rosewood board is which. I think that Møller would have guaranteed a certain uniformity in a chair, so that even if it were composed of different species it would be nearly impossible to tell. | |||||
| "I believe this 3 1/8" | 1 Relevance | 10 years ago | Spanky | General discussion | |
| "I believe this 3 1/8" dimension would be different if a welt is not used." If there is a difference, it would be negligible and would have more to do with the bulkiness of the upholstery fabric. I would just settle on a finished cushion thickness and the fabric and work out the math from there. | |||||

| I use to work at DWR in Santana Row, San Jose and always been in love with the Noguchi Coffee Table. Even with the employee discount, the cost of the table would still be over $700. I shopped around and ended up at All World Furniture and I practically saw the same coffee table with on a $395 price tag. The only difference? A noguchi printed Noguchi autograph on the edge of the glass. Same wood quality and dimensions as the original. And the thick glass top is just a heavy piece of glass. https://www.allworldfurniture.com/125-isamu-noguchi-furniture ... | |||||

| ... with, but the white paint held on for the most part. In one small section, it seemed as if the stripper ate through the paint and some of the actual material rubbed off. I'm probably going to remove the rest of the black layer (which fortunately is not touching the lamp's material due to the white paint being underneath) with more Citristrip and then leave it in a bath to soak to see if the white layer will peel off. My only worry after that is the possibility that the metal skeleton will rust. I attached two photos of the lamp with a small section of black ... | |||||
| Beautiful chairs! | 1 Relevance | 10 years ago | Eameshead | General discussion | |
| Beautiful chairs! Congratulations It is often the case that the fiberglass shell seats show a slightly different character than the undersides-- especially after 65 years. It is most likely from normal repeated use. If the chairs were outside for an extended period of time, the wear and difference in shine would probably be much more severe. Rather than thinking about the evidence of use and age as a problem to be solved, I would suggest that you might embrace that aspect as one of many signs of authenticity. Well-seasoned shells have a character that canno ... | |||||

| ... and Willy Beck chairs. Referring back to the finish on the original chairs, the backrest/arms and frame are both finished in a dark blue lacquer instead of leather. The seat leather has also been replaced, except with a cane weave pattern that was previously used for earlier Larsen / Bender Madsen dining chairs. While certainly striking in appearance, it is odd that the frame and backrest/arms are finished the same, as all other versions use different finishes/woods to help highlight the difference between structural component and seating component of the c ... | |||||

| Apparently there are different types of Rosewood Indonesian and Brazilian. Does anyone know what difference this would make to the value or how I could tell the difference between the two? | |||||
| It appears to be. Brazilian | 1 Relevance | 10 years ago | leif ericson - Zephyr Renner | General discussion | |
| It appears to be. Brazilian Rosewood. If you have reason to suspect it is a different species of Dalbergia, you will likely need a degree in the identification of Rosewood to tell the difference. | |||||
| I can't tell from that photo | 1 Relevance | 10 years ago | Spanky | General discussion | |
| I can't tell from that photo if the fabric would work---it has a nice look but you'd really have to see it in person to know for sure. The weight and hand of a fabric are really hard to judge from photos. You should also look at Coco by Knoll if you want to go in that direction---Knoll will send you swatches right away. I've seen Coco in person and I think it would work nicely. https://www.knoll.com/knolltextileproductdetail/Coco It's a little pricey at $104/yd but I've seen it at Modern-Fabrics in the past and i'm sure it pops up on Ebay, too. | ... local markets. 1stDibs spends more than any competitor on advertising (fashion dealers benefit the most however). They also spend an incredible amount subsidizing shipping cost for customers. LA-NYC white glove delivery of a fragile credenza will likely cost about +$1,500 - 1stdibs offers a flat rate of $350. Pricing is set by antique dealers & designed by the trade. In a sense, designers & firms can be described as a dealer's sales force. Their 'commission' is the difference between the dealers trade & list price. It averages about 20% but varies. | ... I have never owned this particular chair and it's not something I'd buy for myself but I would buy one to resell. If I ever come across one in my frequent visits to thrift stores, I might need to verify its authenticity immediately without waiting hours or days to hear back from Fritz Hansen. I know I'll remember that it was discussed here and I'll be able to look up the discussion quickly, and hopefully I'll figure out whether it's real or not. Pretty sure plenty of others use the forum in this way on occasion. 2. It demonstrates to new collectors---a ... | |||||

On a side note, I also weighed my Dream Chair by Tadao Ando which looks like it could float on clouds but it actually weighs in at 49lbs!!!! | |||||
| Hmmmm… | 1 Relevance | 10 years ago | Eameshead | General discussion | |
| Hmmmm… I suppose there could also be a difference in the density of the metal parts as they were fabricated over the years? Either that, or the variations in wood thickness might be a lot less consistent than the "one-way evolution" of thicker to thinner that I tended to assume before reading tktoo's comment. PS Kin, I couldn't possibly leave your child in my shed, as there is no room whatsoever. (It looks kinda like Objectworship's closet shot at the moment) | |||||
