| So, the difference between | 2 Relevance | 10 years ago | SDR | General discussion | |
| So, the difference between peeled cane and machine-cut would be that the grain of the peeled material would be absolutely parallel to the edges, with (presumably) none of those stray fibers at the edges . . . The corollary in wood would be cut shingles versus split ones. The surface of the split shingles -- sometimes called shakes -- would be more wavy, following the grain of the wood. The reeds would probably have straighter grain than most wood, but the machine likely doesn't follow the grain when it cuts, the way hand-splitting would. | |||||

| Yes I noticed the difference in handles, but actually I was researching something else and then looked at your post and thought they looked alike. For the record, I thoroughly enjoy these posts. | |||||

| Ditto, and you couldn't have an easier type upholstery job for saving the fabric. If you want to go high end, get latex foam instead of urethane. It costs quite a bit more but the difference in comfort is big and it lasts a lot longer than urethane foam. If that will cut into your profits too much (which I totally get), then use a high quality urethane foam and make sure the density level on the seat is higher than on the back. If they are the same density, the back will feel too firm. | |||||

| Another difference that stands out to me is the way the perimeter of the opening in your chair is woven. It has a strand of reed running parallel to the frame of the chair whereas the ditzel chair doesn't. | |||||

| If it makes a difference to those in the know, the dovetails are hand-cut as are the corners of the stopped ends of the dados in the drawer sides. What I find a tad odd is the grain orientation of the back panel. I don't think it was ever intended to be displayed. Possibly a custom piece? Maybe English? I'd be curious to measure it just to see if the dims seem to be metric or not. Whoever made it was pretty exacting. Might be a clue. FWIW, those exact touch latches still seem to be widely available from both US and European outlets. | |||||

| Wow that's some difference! Well done! You definitely made the best of it, and brought it back to its former glory! What are you thinking for the cushions? I'd love a nice grey tone or a deep navy blue......but that's me!!! | |||||

| Difference of Euro and American? Thanks Zafari! I can't get an actual cost for replacements from Knoll, but I don't doubt you that they will be costly. I will set key words for ebay and see what comes up. I appreciate your advice. Don | |||||

| Difference of Euro and American? Thanks Mark! Now I am confused. According to this 1987 BBC video, Knoll International in Italy applied rivets to the straps exactly like my chair. (start 12:44) So only if the chair is American made it is Knoll? As a newbie I appreciate all the information posted here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NUpGYMckyo | |||||

| Vive La difference! It's not impossible, but I wouldn't mess with trying to tone teak. And, yes, it comes naturally in different shades. It may seem unacceptable now, but I would give it time. As Mark said, your set grew organically and it's okay that it looks that way. Besides, one never knows. If you really can't stand it, a better match may be awaiting just down the road. | |||||
| The arms are differently shaped! | 2 Relevance | 13 years ago | leif ericson - Zephyr Renner | General discussion | |
| The arms are differently shaped! Sometimes I am dense as concrete: I just noticed one other huge difference. The arms are different shapes on the underside. The "older" version, on the left, has a much more sculpted arm. Note this sculpting also optimizes the use of raw teak into 2 smaller dimensioned, less expensive pieces of raw teak. If PaereDansk is to be believed, this would follow from Møller's new machinery in 1971, which eliminated labor in construction, and, apparently, Møller balanced those savings with more expense in the larger piece of teak f ... | |||||
