| Jes, tell me... Is the Braun HM-5 console on the title page RED? Or is the color skewed. I don't think I've ever seen a red one. Well, I've never actually seen one but the few pictures I've seen were walnut(?) veneer. I usually see the cabinet design attributed to Herbert Hirche (not Hans Gugelot) with the Braun electronics look being attributed to dieter Rams of course. Bet it sounds wonderful. Edited to add a link to Herbert Hirche in Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herbert_Hirche | |||||

| Although obsolete, a fine example of dieter Rams for Braun from the mid 1960's for under $10. Even the original vinyl case is well designed. Niceguy, I am not sure if you are a Pierre Paulin fan (or a reissued icon fan) but his iconic desk reiintroduced by Ligne Roset will be a nice addition to your collection. | |||||

| ... that it is a Braun (a variant of the reductive Ulm School designs by Herbert Hirsch). If the top coat is a high gloss finish, it is most likely a Grundig and it will have the Grundig name in front. (Other woods like beech and ash veneer with a matte finish were also used in the iconic Snow White's coffin by Braun Sk4, SK55 and others by Hans Gugelot and dieter Rams). Your console looks like it shared the same components as the Grundig AG model. It is hard to say who made what. Braun has improved/rebranded some of the best products out there at the time ... | |||||

| Thanks! Thank you all for the suggestions! I should have clarified that I am in the US, so some of those options are more limited. I had looked at the George Nelson Omni system (what a beauty, by the way...), but don't think the dimensions would work for me. They seem to be around 30-32 inches wide for each vertical "module", and I only have about 45 inches so just one module doesn't fully utilize the space and there's not enough room for two. I think I'm honing in a solution though, and it's going to be more custom tailored than I had originally expected. A ... | |||||

| We are all obsessed to say th... We are all obsessed to say the least. My weaknesses are vintage watches (ranging from classic Breitling Navitimers to Georg Jensen to dieter Rams watches), Georg Jensen cufflinks and tie bars, Jensen flatware, Newer design/architecture books aside from modernist furniture and lighting. I have also figured out an ingenious way of buying very high end suits...sport coats...blazers...and outerwear. By obtaining gently used examples, I save myself from worrying so much about them. As I'm still quite young, its more practical and ... | |||||

| Cane for me mum Made this cane for my soon to be 90 year old step mother. Yes I know it's obvious I got the idea for the design from dieter Rams' cane. My dear second mom has arthritis in her hands and needed to replace the one she had been using as it was causing her pain. The shaft is made of hard maple and the handle is black walnut. The shaft has an slightly angled integral tenon morticed through the handle. It's quite comfortable to use and feels much more balanced than the classic offset cane handle. | |||||

| . Its a seminal design worthy of respect, despite all the poor derivative chairs. It may (or may not) look institutional but they are still well made and attractive and an important part of modern design history, sometimes the 'sterility' of good design (Hi dieter!) is what is a comfort, the clarity can be a great tonic, have you never got home after a really shit day and just don't want any bloody fuss? Thats when design like this wins. Besides in context even the 'warmest' modern design can be rather awful. http://www.flickr.com/photos/sandiv999/37344373 ... | |||||

| You're right, SDR- Most people obsess on the aesthetics of lamps and pay no mind to the way the room's actually lit, I suspect. You can get a lot more mileage from some cheap little can-lamps --strategically placed-- than an ill-situated fancy-pedigree fixture. (Like dieter sez: being well-balanced is better than being exalted!) | |||||

| . When you're discovering something new it's always good to have a look at the foundation and history of a thing, I think maybe you should read up on what modernism is, what the principles are, what the bauhaus did, why and how. Dieter says... Good design is innovative. Good design makes a product useful. Good design is aesthetic. Good design helps us to understand a product. Good design is unobtrusive. Good design is honest. Good design is durable. Good design is consequent to the last detail. Good design is concerned with the environment Good design is as ... | |||||

| A valuable collection matty, I assume that this form of media is "dear to you" as it is to me. I always want to diplay my many collections with their "best foot forward" and I can not see any alternative to the dieter Rams 606 Universal Shelving Unit. Just acquire something once, and never again search for a better piece. This is how I like to spend my money. Go to IKEA is you must! | |||||
