I had plenty of time (maybe way too much) but I lacked the ability to make the connections, or at least write them out satisfactorily, with any kind of clarity or cohesion. My thought was that, to a degree at least, one might insert song for house, make a case for a comparison of Dylan being to popular music what Wright was to architecture. But that's as far as I got. Sorry for going off-track there. I didn't mean to derail dc's thread, and hope that's not the ...

| Lenox Sorry, I misunderstood what you were looking for; I didn't realize that you wanted examples of other 3217s EXACTLY like yours, with no upholstery. I suspect that most people who bought a new 3217 in those days wanted upholstery on their expensive new office chairs, so yours might be rare. These days, now that the Series Seven is such a design icon, the clean look of the unupholstered chairs is more popular... Although I must say that I find them mildly uncomfortable: I slide forward on the slippery bare wood and can't really sit straight for very long ... | |||||

| Well. . . Practicing psychoanalysis without a license, on a "patient" you've never met, might be a stretch. Considering that, you got quite a ways down a reasonably valid road, perhaps. That is, just because he had sisters doesn't necessarily mean that he didn't have the sort of relationship with his mother that you describe. Indeed, we might be surprised that he didn't turn out to be gay ! (There is no sign of that, however. . .) All that about his clothing kind of eludes me -- but then again I'm not a shrink, either, so -- who knows ? Perhaps we could ha ... | |||||

| Whitespike you win... ..hands down every time with that story, hilarious. Why not just ask for it as I have done on two different occasions. First time I saw a black Eames chair drove past it several times night and day the chair was just outside. Finally decided to inquire about it, the owners didn?t speak English, so I sent my friend who speaks Russian and got that one. The Bertoia chair I saw it sitting on a porch in a country house drove right up and asked if he would sell it. He ended up giving it to me for the best price of all FREE99. | |||||
| "saving"/explain? | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | Monochrome | General discussion | |
| "saving"/explain? Hi, Sparkie-- I didn't mean to sound snarky. 🙂 1. IMHO, there's more value in leather -- it would be worth the wait. 2. Who could argue that saving's not virtuous? (Not that I practice what I preach -- no sales resistance over here.) 3. "If it's an option" -- Sadly, many of us are too short of cash to stash even a little of it away. How's that? | |||||
| Polyester vs. cashmere? | 1 Relevance | 17 years ago | fastfwd | General discussion | |
| Polyester vs. cashmere? That's a little extreme. A better analogy would be rayon vs. silk. Charles Eames deliberately chose vinyl for the chairs; as far as I know, leather didn't become an option until after his death. From the Eames Office's website: "Naugahyde was not a random choice by the Eames Office. The Eames Office wanted to supply customers with chairs that weren't 'dust collectors' and Naugahyde was a good, dust repelling material for that purpose." Personally, I like the Aluminum Group chairs in fabric more than in either leather OR vinyl. htt ... | |||||

Domestic scale, would you abuse nice expensive furniture or cheap disposable Ikea furniture? How would you respond to someone other than yourself abusing either types? Around the world, we're seeing the results of recklessly high risk ventures collapsing and being rewarded with generous safety nets. What would we be experiencing now if high risk didn't have such generous safety nets? I'm not suggesting we do away with safety nets. ...

| I am very interested in how and what you see. It never occurred to me that one could detect which measuring system was used by the appearance of the object. If I didn't misunderstand you, could you elaborate ? I admit to being out of my depth when contemplating and using metric measurements -- despite their being the more "logical" and comprehensible than inches and feet. I do believe that we become wedded to the system we use, and I personally feel so comfortable with the Imperial divisions -- the oddly poetic fractions of 8 parts or 12, and multiples o ... | |||||

| I also like the colors. But that's beside the point of the question. I don't know how specific Arne Jacobsen was in this case. I do know he was specific about the number of legs on the Ant chair. That didn't stop Fritz Hansen from going against his specifications after his death. If we ignore for a moment that the manufacturers are primarily in it for the money, was that move evolutionary or disrespectful? I am not saying colors and finishes are the same thing, but where do you draw the line? Is the only constraint that the product solve the problem it was d ... | |||||

You can leave them bare and just polish them from time to time. I left them bare and I didn't have to do anything to it for the 2 years I had the chair. Or you can save yourself the time and hassle and have a shop do it. If you have a lot of these chairs (not sure how many you picked up), this might be the best route for you. How are the bases? If they're oxidized, I'd have them polishe ...

| Thanks Gustaf... I must... Thanks Gustaf... I must say, I didn't know much about Muji... I've never seen their shop or anything. But my friend gave me this link, and it made me very curious about whole company. I even checked their previous competitions, where I really like the "towel with further options" that applies natural cicle of becoming more rough.. to be a wash cloth and later a floor cloth... Reusing towels for floor cloth was pretty common also in my family, and i think it great to remind others about this option, in case they might have forgotten ... | |||||

| Oh, the irony So, I spent a couple of hours trying to figure out what trash can to buy, not to mention more than $100. And I got a new one and it's great. (People have been commenting on it -- I didn't think it was THAT nice!) A few days after I got it, DD turned 7 and we had a party. And now the trash can has a dent. Doh! | |||||
