| Some of the thrifts in the An... Some of the thrifts in the Ann Arbor area get a little ahead of themselves when they price things. I didn't feel $12.99 was bad, but I've come across pieces that are in rough shape that have obscene prices on them. I always talk them down with the "Frequent Buyer" excuse. They see me all the time and they know I spend $$, so more times than not they succumb to my will. | |||||

| not vintage It's not one of the vintage chairs, for sure. The older bases weren't chrome, and the chairs didn't have visible bolts (unless, like mine, it was repaired by a doofus). I admit I'm not an expert, though, so maybe someone else can tell you if it's a newer incarnation or just a knockoff. Either way, $99 isn't bad. | |||||

| ... not together to begin with, as I don't see any signs that indicate as such. The wood/color match perfectly and it's obvious that they were from the same company/brand, but as william-holden-caulfield mentioned these could be parts of a modular system. I didn't think about that! SDR, tambour door is not counterbalanced, so unless you lock it it will come down. It looks pretty but is not very useful so I always leave it open. China cabinet? I don't know. I don't see any hung or channel as some mentioned. I do see, however, small holes in rows on the she ... | |||||

| My television is mostly for... My television is mostly for gaming purposes. I don't even have cable anymore. We couldn't see paying the high costs of cable when I didn't really watch it all that much. We usually either play games or watch movies. The room set up is oriented to the television but my living room is also set up to incorporate the fish tank so it really limits where we have to place furniture. We don't actually game from the sofa. The flat screen we have right now that is only about 27" flat screen. We do plan on upgrading to a slightly l ... | |||||

| Good points. I didn't mean to suggest, by the way, that the weight was a problem in itself. Rather, it's just an indication that the construction is inefficient, which usually translates into clunky bloatedness... Like spanning the Golden Gate with a gigantic I-beam rather than a delicate suspension bridge. In the book design, the table legs weigh 2.5 times as much as the top they're supporting. That seems wrong to me. I'd MUCH rather see each segment supported by a narrow leg at each of its three corners; that would make the table lighter (visually as we ... | |||||

| ... on the construction: If each leg isn't perfectly square (i.e., perpendicular to the top), the pie slices won't fit together. Also, look at the grain on those pie slices. That's not "make a circle, cut it into 1/4s". If the book is intended to just give general design ideas and inspire the reader to come up with his own plans, that's cool. But when I see assembly drawings and dimensions, that looks to me like a plan that the author wants me to follow exactly. You and the book's author say "cut eight 18x18 squares", but what's really needed are four 18x18 a ... | |||||

| Sorry. "Half an hour ago it was definitely post Bertoia and made by Knoll because of the smooth slate base and the lack of holding brackets/ fixings for the wires.. Very odd" He said he didn't know after I talked to him again. That's why I edited it. | |||||

| If you happen to learn anythi... If you happen to learn anything on how to tell if one is authentic or not, it would be great if you could share that with the forum. I almost bought one of these once that looked great, but I chickened out because I just didn't know how to tell if it was the real deal. | |||||

But I must rib Olive for a moment, as I am surprised one of her solutions was to leave a TV on for aesthetic purposes. Power suck only to make the black hole more bearable! Tsk tsk! 1. TVs are a part of life. I don't hide that I watch TV. My sofa faces it, too, because I refuse to get a crick in my neck so that I might impress others. My living room, I feel, does a good job at foc ... | |||||

| ... if that TV is a high-end video projector or a 60" Kuro Elite (or whatever the best plasma is these days). TV loses not just for its many technical shortcomings (limited color palette, low resolution, etc., which even the best equipment can't correct) but also for the intangible experiential differences. It's like going out for a drink, or out for dinner in a restaurant: Even if you have exactly the same drink or meal at home, going out and having the experience with other people feels VERY different. Maybe it's because I grew up without a TV and so didn't ... | |||||

| ... compared to most of our peers'. Seriously, who needs to watch Law and Order on a 60" screen? We went the standard way - even with the old TV. I found a pair of small walnut credenzas on Craigslist. They were everything I wanted: cheap - only $60 for the pair, decent enough construction - but not so nice that I felt bad chopping a hole in the back, and most importantly they have sliding doors ala McCobb. I didn't want swing doors because of how they intrude into the room. The biggest problem I have with flat screens is the blackness - a giant gleaming sl ... | |||||

| Ya I know. I believe the lowe... Ya I know. I believe the lower prices are either from replicas, or they didn't go through the process of verifying the piece. I just got off the phone with Val Bertoia a few minutes ago, and sent my photos over. So I'll see. | |||||
